DESCENDANTS OF PETER GRAVES OF SURRY CO., NC

GENERATION 1

Peter Graves (1) was born about 1750-55, and probably died after 1830 in Indiana. (See census data below for all Peter Graves in Surry Co., NC and Monroe Co., IN.)  There is some question about his parentage.  There is no question in the minds of most people that he was descended from Capt. Thomas Graves of VA.  He may have been a son of William Graves and Dorothy ‑‑‑‑‑‑.  The mother of Peter Graves, Jr. and Mary is not known.

In the book by Aubrey Graves, Graves Family History and Genealogy, 1968, several errors have been uncovered.  The “Inventory of Peter Graves Estate” on p. 158 has incorrectly been attributed to this Peter Graves.  The inventory is actually for his son Peter Graves, Jr. following his death in 1814.  The assertion that Peter Graves, Sr. and Peter Graves, Jr. both married in Surry County in 1809 is also in error:  The Peter Graves who married Sarah Merion (or Marion) is probably the Peter Graves of genealogy 888.  The Peter Graves who married Sarah Carmichael is Peter Graves (2) in this genealogy.  Also, incorrectly asserted in Aubrey’s genealogy is the statement that Peter, Jr. and Sara(h) Carmichael are buried in Carmichael Cemetery in Greene Co., IN.  Sarah married second William Martindale between 17 March 1827 and 10 March 1829 and was married to him for nearly twenty years before her death (before 24 Sept. 1846 when Martindale married Elizabeth Anthon).  These stones may represent memorials erected for Peter, Jr. and Sarah Carmichael or for Peter Graves and Sarah Merion of genealogy 888.

The 1810 census of Surry Co., NC lists the household of Peter Graves with 1 male over 45 (b. 1765 or earlier, probably Peter Sr.), 1 male 16 to 25 (b. 1785-1794, probably Peter Jr.), 1 male 10 to 15 (b. 1795-1800), 2 males under 10 (b. 1800-1809), 1 female under 10, 1 female 16-26, and 1 female over 45.  Listed on the same page as this Peter Graves is a Thomas Graves with 1 male 16-25 (b. 1785-1794), 2 males under 10, (b. 1800-1809), 1 female 16-25, and 1 female over 45 (b. 1765 or earlier).

The 1820 census of Surry Co., NC lists the household of Peter Graves with 3 males under 10 (b. 1810-1820), 1 male over 45 (b. 1775 or earlier), 1 female 16-26 (b. 1794-1804).  This is probably Peter Graves of genealogy 888.

The 1830 census of Surry Co., NC lists the household of Peter Graves with 1 male 10-15 (b. 1815-1820), 2 males 15-20 (b. 1810-1815), 1 male 40-50 (b. 1780-1790), 1 female 10-15 (b. 1815-1820), and 1 female 40-50 (b. 1780-1790).  This is probably Peter Graves of genealogy 888.

The 1830 census of Monroe Co., IN, p. 162, lists the household of (this) Peter Graves with 1 male 60-70 (b. 1760-1770), and 1 female 80-90 (b. 1740-1750).

The 1840 census of Monroe Co., IN, p. 266 lists the household of Peter Graves with 1 male 20-30 (b. 1810-1820), 1 male 50-60 (b. 1780-1790), and 1 female 40-50 (b. 1790-1800).  This is probably Peter Graves of genealogy 888.

The 1850 census of Indian Creek Twp., Monroe Co., IN. lists the household of Peter Graves, age 66, born about 1784 in NC, a farmer, with Sarah, age 66, born about 1784 in NC.  This is also the Peter Graves of genealogy 888.

There is no known proof that Mary Graves was a daughter of Peter.  However, the fact that she married a brother of Sarah Carmichael is supportive.  Also, although her marriage date is given as 1812, since she had a son in 1810, it seems likely that she was married by 1810, so her exclusion from the household of Peter Graves Sr. in the 1810 census seems reasonable.  Also, if Peter's first wife had died by 1809, Mary might well have been living with another family in 1810, even if she hadn't married by then.  (R‑1, R‑503)

GENERATION 2

CHILDREN OF PETER GRAVES (1)

Peter Graves, Jr. (2) was born about 1785, and died 19 March 1814 in Fort Hawkins, NC in the War of 1812.  He married Sarah Carmichael, daughter of Archibald Carmichael and Elizabeth Nix, on 15 May 1811 in Surry Co., NC.  Bondsman was Peter Graves (probably his father).  Sarah was born between 1780 and 1790 (per the 1840 census), and died before 24 Sept. 1846 when her second husband, William Martindale married widow Elizabeth Anthon in Greene Co., IN.  Archibald Carmichael, the administrator of the estate of Peter Graves, Jr. (inventory shown on p. 158 of Aubrey Graves' book and incorrectly thought to be the estate of Peter Graves, Sr.) declared in his (Archibald Carmichael’s) will, 17 March 1827, Surry Co., NC, that he gave to his "daughter Sarah Graves all my tract of land that I now live on together with all the farming utensials [sic] the above land to belong to the said Sarah Graves and her two children Thomas Graves and Jain Graves and that my wife Sallie Carmichael is to live on it her life time.”  R‑2 incorrectly quoted this as “her mother Elizabeth”; Elizabeth died between 1814 and 1827 and Archibald referred to his wife as Sallie, who is thought to be a Martindale according to R‑5.  Since Archibald's will named no other grandchild, it seems unlikely that William Graves, born 5 Feb. 1815, was a son of this Peter Graves as stated in the book by Aubrey Graves.  This William is included in genealogy 888.

Sarah remarried between 17 March 1827 (the date of her father’s will) and 10 March 1829; in 1829 in Surry Co. deed book V, pp. 146-7, Joseph Carmical, Alexander Carmical, and “Sarah Graves…her present husband William Martindale”, sold land inherited from Archibald Carmical.  In Patrick Co., VA, deed book 7, p. 364, William Martindale, alias Brown, and wife Sarah Martindale, sold land 23 Sept. 1829.  The family moved to Greene Co., IN.

Sarah was believed buried in Carmichael Cem., east of Cincinnati, IN, in Greene Co., near the Monroe Co. line.  The original, thin sandstone marker on her grave was inscribed "Sarah wife of Peter Graves", with no dates.  R‑5 pointed out that Sarah (Carmichael) Graves Martindale’s stone would probably read Sarah wife of William Martindale.  (R‑2, R‑503)

Children - Graves

+4.  Jane Graves, b. 3 Feb. 1812, m. Jackson Martindale, 5 March 1840, d. 17 April 1889.

+5.  Thomas Peter Graves, b. 11 Feb. 1814, m. Mary Ann Teague, 12 Jan. 1834, d. 2 Sept. 1887.

Mary (“Polly”) Graves (3) was born 24 Aug. 1787 in NC, died 11 May 1863 in Monroe Co., IN, and was buried in Teague Cem., Indian Creek Twp., Monroe Co., IN.  Her tombstone records her dates as born 1790 and died 1863.  She married Richard Carmichael, son of Archibald Carmichael and Elizabeth Nix, on 26 June 1812[1] in Surry Co., NC.  Richard was born 4 Feb. 1785 in NC (possibly Caswell Co., or Halifax Co.,VA per R‑15), died 7 Nov. 1870 in Clinton Co., IN, and was buried in Veneman Cem., Clinton Co., IN.  He was a farmer and a hardshell Baptist.

In 1839, Richard Carmichael was named guardian of his brother Joseph's minor children.  After Joseph's daughter Suzanna married John Wesley Carmichael, Richard surrendered guardianship to John, claiming he was now too old for the responsibility.

The 1850 census for Indian Twp., Monroe Co., IN, p. 694, no. 698, shows Richard Carmichael, 65, farmer, Mary Carmichael, 60, and Walker Graves[2], 17 (b.c. 1833), NC, farmer, not in household in 1840.  Another Walker Graves found in Boone Co., KY is not the one in Monroe Co., IN[3].

The first nine children of Mary and Richard Carmichael were born in NC, and the tenth in Monroe Co., IN.

An article (provided by R-7) from the Bloomington Morning World, dated Thursday, 28 Dec. 1899, and titled “Remarkable Family History” reads as follows:

“There are now living five members of the family of Richard Carmichael, once noted in this county for his wonderful memory of history and the bible, although he could not read nor write.  He was recognized as a factor in politics up to the war.  He lived in Indian Creek township from 1827 to 1870 and owned a part of the farm now in possession of Jacob Tague [sic].  The family consisted of James Carmichael, Elizabeth Sare, Sarah East, Peter Carmichael, Jane Sare, Mary Oliphant, Nancy Oliphant, Alexander Carmichael, Richard Carmichael, and Elizabeth Oliphant.

All these children lived to be of age and the first death in the family was that of Richard after he was married.  Soon after his death and that of his father and mother there followed Elizabeth Sare, Mary Oliphant, Peter and James Carmichael being just half of this noble family of pioneers.  The youngest is now sixty years of age.  They reside as follows:  Sarah East near Worthington; Jane Sare, Indian Creek township; Mary Oliphant, Clinton County; Alexander Carmichael, Harrodsburg; and Elizabeth Oliphant just southeast of Bloomington.  The father and mother were members of the regular Baptist church, and all the children with one exception are members of the church, five being members of the Baptist church, three Methodists and one of the Christian church.  This is a remarkable demonstration of the influence of parents over children.  I presume there are not many families like this.

[1] This marriage date of 1812 seems unlikely.  Since her first child was apparently born in 1810, it seems more likely that she was married by 1810.  Other possibilities are that she had a child before marriage, that Richard had another marriage before his marriage to Mary, or that this child born 1810 was not their child (perhaps a nephew).  The 1820 census actually lists 2 males of 10-15 years (b. 1805-1810) and 2 females of 10-15 years (b. 1805-1810), and also another adult male in Richard's age bracket (perhaps a brother?).  Other unknown people were listed in the 1830 census.

[2] This Walker Graves is actually Alex Walker Graves, son of William B. Graves and Elizabeth ‑‑‑‑‑‑ (genealogy 69).

[3] Boone Co., KY Will Book C, p. 261, James Graves, 20 June 1835-Sept. 1835: "My executors are authorized with the advice & consent of Joseph Graves, Reuben Graves, Edward Graves, Henry F. Graves, Absalom Graves & Joel Garnett … to sell any part of my estate.  My children: Walker Graves, Ames Graves, John Graves, Franklin Graves, Stephen Graves, ‑‑‑‑‑‑ Graves & Milton Graves (some are under-age).  1/2 acre of land on the tract I now reside upon, including the family burial ground, is given to my children, brothers, sisters, nephews and nieces to be used as a burying ground.  Executor: son Walker Graves and nephew John Gaines; witness: Joel Garnett, H. F. James, John Terrill, Edward Graves."

The James Graves who made this will was born 1776 in VA, was descended from Capt. Thomas Graves of VA (gen. 169), and married Mary Walker.  His eldest son, Walker Graves, was born 1806 and stayed in KY.
