DESCENDANTS OF SARAH GRAVES AND JOSEPH SHEPARD

OF VT AND NY

GENERATION 1

Sarah (“Sally”) Graves (1) was born 18 April 1800 in VT, died 22 April 1881 in Evans, Erie Co., NY, and was buried in Evans Cem., Evans.  She married Joseph Shepard, son of Joseph Shepard and Anna Allyn, on 15 Oct. 1819 in Pittsford, Monroe Co., NY.  He was born 4 Nov. 1780 in New Hartford, CT, was christened 26 Aug. 1781 in New Hartford, died 11 May1858 in Hamburg, Erie Co., NY, and was also buried in Evans Cem.  They lived their married life in Hamburg, Erie Co., NY.  He served in the War of 1812.  Sarah was living in the household of Irene Shepard, widow of her son Matthias, in 1880 in Chautauqua, Chautauqua Co., NY.

According to the Internation Genealogical Index (IGI), Sally was born in Richford Twp., Franklin Co., VT.  Richford Twp. was founded in 1897, incorporated in 1899, and had a population of 113 in 1800.  However, there was no Graves head of household listed in Richford in the 1800 census.  The only Graves surname in Franklin Co., VT in 1800 was Luman Graves in Georgia, Franklin Co., VT.  He was descended from Deacon George Graves of Hartford, CT, and does not seem to have had a daughter named Sally.

Joseph Shepard first married Asenath Bailey on 2 Jan. 1809.  She was born 7 May 1777 and died 13 Feb. 1819.  Children by this marriage were: (1) Ann, b. 5 March 1810, m. ‑‑‑‑‑‑ Farnsworth, d. 19 Jan. 1848; (2) Lois, b. 1 Sept. 1811, m. ‑‑‑‑‑‑ LeBarron, d. 2 March 1851; (3) Joseph, b. 3 July 1813, m.
