DESCENDANTS OF WILLIAM

OF YORKSHIRE, ENGLAND
GENERATION 1
William Graves (1) was born in 1714
and died in 1793. He married
Elizabeth Pinkerton. (R‑2)

GENERATION 2
CHILDREN OF WILLIAM GRAVES (1)
AND ELIZABETH PINKERTON
Thomas Graves (2) was probably born
in 1776, was baptized 24 June 1776 in Rawcliffe, parish of Snaith, Yorkshire,
England, died 11 June 1852 (or 28 Oct. 1852[1]),
age 75, at Pastures Farm, Yorkshire, and was buried 14 June 1852 in Rawcliffe[2].
He married Mary Ellis about
1793-1794. She was baptized 16
Nov. 1777 at Rawcliffe, and died at age 65 (probably shortly before the 1841
census). (There was a William
Ellis, born 21 July 1765, died 1805 at Rawcliffe, married Hannah ‑‑‑‑‑‑
of Howden, Yorkshire, about 1778.
He may have been a brother or other close relation of Mary Ellis.) All their children were born at
Rawcliffe, Yorkshire.
It is likely that this Graves
family is related to that of Robert Quarton Wilkinson Graves, who was born in
York, Yorkshire, and married Mary Maria Bramley (genealogy 331), and to that of
William Greaves and Sarah Burland of Yorkshire (genealogy 114) . The map on the next page shows the
areas around York and Snaith where this family lived. Carlton is about 1 mile north of Snaith, Rawcliffe is about
3 miles east, and Howden is about 8 miles northeast of Snaith. Aughton (probably the one where some
later descendants lived) is about halfway between Snaith and York.
He was in the 1841 and 1851
censuses for Rawcliffe, Snaith, Yorkshire. In 1841, Hannah Ellis, 45, was living in his household. (R‑2)

His father, John, was ready to give Quosquo Hall farm to JohnÕs brother
William. John said he was next in
age, and his father replied that he wasnÕt married. John said he soon could be, and was married the following
week. The 1881 census shows John

He married Maria Anna Bramley on 6 Feb. 1849 at Snaith, Yorkshire,

Yorkshire., and was a farmer. She

He married Maria Miller on 10 Oct. 1814 in Pontefract. She was born 5 Jan. 1794 in Knottingley,

Maria was a sister of Thomas
Bramley, Jr., who married Hannah Ramskill Greaves on 19 Sept. 1849 at
Knottingley, Yorkshire, England.
Hannah's parents were Benjamin Greaves and Mary Johnson, both of whom
died in 1835. Benjamin's parents
were William Greaves and Sarah Burland, married 3 March 1782, of Pontefract,
Yorkshire, England.
James and Maria went to Australia
after 1857 (probably after 1873), and apparently settled in Queensland. In 1938, George Miller, a grandson,
went from Chicago to visit the family in Queensland.
The 1851 census for Carlton,
Yorkshire, lists their first child, Robert Hinsley Graves. The 1861 census for Firby, Yorkshire,
only listed children Jane and Charles with them. However, a search of the area shows that the older children
were in various small boarding schools.
The 1871 census for Firby, Yorkshire, shows all the children living at
home.
The first 4 children of James and
Maria were born in Carlton, the next at Carlton Bridge, and the last 6 at
Firby, Yorkshire (about 30-35 miles northwest of York). (R‑1, R‑2)
