GENERATION 2

CHILDREN OF ‑‑‑‑‑‑ GRAVES (1)

George Clinton Graves (2) was born about 1810 in Lynchburg, VA.  When quite a young man, he located in Wytheville, VA., and married Charlotte Logan Sprinkle, daughter of Henry Sprinkle, Jr. and Susanna Heft.  She was born in Wythe Co., VA.

George has not been identified in the 1830 or 1840 censuses of Virginia.  George and Charlotte have not been found in the 1850 census.  However, children William and Virginia (both listed as born in TN) are in the 1850 census for Wythe Co., VA, living with Charlotte’s father Henry (b.c. 1772, PA) and Mary Sprinkle (b.c. 1799, TN, probably their aunt).  (R‑1, R‑2)

Children - Graves

    5.  Elizabeth Graves, d. at about 19 years of age.

+6.   William Henry Graves, b. 7 Sept. 1833, m. Florida Whiting, d. 29 July 1931.

    7.  Virginia C. Graves, b.c. 1835, m. John H. Caldwell (or maybe Cardwell?).

William C. Graves (3) was probably born 1812-1820 (based on the ages of his known siblings and his date of marriage(, and died in 1845.  He married Margaret A. Hood on 11 Dec. 1839 in Mars Hill Presbyterian Church, Athens, McMinn Co., TN.  She was born about 1817 in SC (according to the 1850 census).  After William died, she married Moses Cunningham on McMinn Co., TN in 1850.

William Graves of Athens, McMinn Co., TN was given as a brother of George and Clarissa by John Card Graves (R‑1), and the William discussed here is the only one found who fits the description.  The Kingston Gazeteer of Kingston, TN, and the Hiawassee Patriot newspapers both listed the marriage.  A query in GenForum, May 14, 1998, by Vickie Elam White, stated: “Need info on William and Margaret A. (HOOD) GRAVES, who lived in Athens, McMinn Co. TN. They married in 1839, in McMinn Co. TN.  William died in 1845, leaving two minor children -- George Arthur and Clarissa. They became wards of their uncle, Donald M. HOOD of Cass Co., GA. (Cass Co. was formed in 1832 and was renamed Bartow Co. in 1861.) Margaret remarried in 1850 to Moses CUNNINGHAM of McMinn Co., TN.”

The 1850 census for Cass Co., GA, lists Donald M. Hood, 26, TN, in the household of John B. Hood, 70, TN, with John M. Graves, 6, TN.  The 1860 census for Rome, Floyd Co., GA, shows Donald M. Hood, 36, married, with no Graves children.

The 1850 census for McMinn Co., TN, in the household of Moses Cunningham, farmer, and wife Margaret, lists Clarissa Graves, 21, George Graves, 10, John Graves, 8, Margaret Graves, 8, all born in TN.  Obviously, if the children went to GA, they didn’t stay there.  The 1860 census for McMinn Co., TN, lists Clara C. Graves, 19, and George Graves, 17, living with Moses and Margaret Cunningham.

    8.  Clarissa Graves, b.c. 1841.

Clarissa Graves (4) was born about 1814 in TN, and died about 1838 (1834-1840) in Knox Co., TN.  She married James Henry Cardwell, son of Perrin Cardwell and Elizabeth (Amelia) Worsham, on 15 Jan. 1834 in Knox Co., TN.  He was born 6 Dec. 1812 in VA, and died 26 Jan. 1853 in Abingdon, Washington Co., VA.  (R‑3)
