GRAVES AND REBECCA DEAN

GENERATION 1
Lemuel (or Lemual) Graves (1) was
born about 1827 in Randolph Co., NC, and died about 1865 in Union Grove,
Marshall Co., AL. He married Rebecca
Dean on 12 Jan. 1851 in Jackson Co., AL in a ceremony performed by William
Mason, J.P., as recorded in Jackson Co. Marriages, p. 13. She was born about 1828 in NC, and died 26
Jan. 1917 in Union Grove, Marshall Co., AL.
They were buried in Sweet Home Cem., Union Grove, Marshall Co., AL. The family was from Randolph Co., NC. They moved to AL from NC before 1850, since
in that year Lemuel was listed as a laborer, age 33, in the household of John
B. Graves (family 533, Jackson Co., AL).
In that same 1850 census, family 532 was headed by Sarah Deane, age 54,
with daughter Rebecca, age 23, and other children Thomas, Martha and Nancy. Lemuel Graves and Rebecca were in the 1860
census for Marshall Co., AL; in the 1870 census for Marshall Co., AL, Rebecca
headed the family and sons Robert B., John H., Thomas O., and Lenard [sic]
lived with her. In 1880, Rebecca and
son Leonard, 14, lived in Marshall Co., AL.
In 1900, she lived with son Thomas and his family in Oleander, Marshall
Co., AL. She stated that three of her
eight children were living. In 1910,
she lived with son John in Oleander, AL; at that time she stated that two of
her eight children were living. R‑4
believes Leonard Sr. of Randolph Co., NC, listed in the 1830 and 1840 census,
as being the probable father of Lemuel Graves.
The 1850 Marshall Co., AL census
listed James Graves and Eliza Jane Walker (gen. 98) and their children. The 1860 census for Marshall Co. listed
Eliza Jane without James Graves (who had died), and Lemuel Graves and
family. It is believed there could be a
connection between these two families, although James could not have been the
father of Lemuel, since James and Eliza did not marry until 1833.
It is likely that John B. Graves
(born about 1824 in NC, mentioned above, gen. 292) was a brother of Lemuel
Graves. They were in the census
together and both married Dean daughters.
It is also likely that another brother was Leonard Graves (in the 1880
Marshall Co., AL census), born about 1832, married Elizabeth (b.c. 1840), who
had children Sarah (b.c. 1857), Hardis (b.c. 1863), and John (b.c. 1867). They may have been descended from John
Graves and Margery Harvey (gen. 77) through their son Leonard Graves.

1840 AL census were Elijah and William in Jackson Co., John C., Jesse, James
Jr., James Sr., F., Thomas, William, Alex, Latham, and Doctor in Blount Co.,

Robert Benjamin Graves (2) was born
in May 1851 in AL, according to the 1900 census, died in May 1928 in Cullman
Co., AL, and was buried in City Cem., Cullman, AL. He married Sarah Brown, daughter of James B. Brown, on 31 Dec.
1873. She was born in Sept. 1850 in
AL. This family was listed on the 1880
census in Marshall Co., AL and the 1900 and 1910 censuses in Cullman Co., AL;
their children were born in AL. In 1900
and 1910, Sarah stated that seven of her eight children were living. In 1900, Sarah’s widowed father, age 90,

("Peggy") (Wilson) Barnard, born 15 Jan. 1815, died 19 Feb. 1884,
both buried in Oleander.
He married second Mary Ann Turner
on 29 May 1881 in Marshall Co., AL. She
was born 16 July 1853, and died 18 Jan. 1935 in Union Grove, Marshall Co.,
AL. Her father was Andrew Jackson
Turner, born 1827 in TN, died 1 Aug. 1887, and her mother was Elizabeth Waters,

the 1880 and 1900 censuses for Marshall Co., AL. He married Lucinda (“Lucy”) Williams, daughter of Oran D. Williams
and Melinda Burnett, on 11 March 1880 in Marshall Co., AL. They were married by H. G. Williams at the
home of her father. She was born in
July 1866, and was also buried in Union Grove Cem. “Lue” headed this family in 1910 Marshall Co., AL and reported
that all ten of her ten children were living.
