DESCENDANTS OF SAMUEL GRAVES

OF MONMOUTH CO., NJ AND BEDFORD CO., PA

 

 

GENERATION 1

 

Samuel Graves (1) was born 23 April 1741 in Monmouth Co., NJ, and died 19 April 1828 in Bedford Co., PA.  He moved from Monmouth Co., NJ to Bedford Co., PA in 1772.  He married Asenath ‑‑‑‑‑‑.  She was born 4 Oct. 1739 in Monmouth Co., NJ, died 5 Aug. 1807 in Bethel Twp., Bedford Co., PA, and was buried in Tonoloway Baptist Cem., Fulton Co., PA.  He apparently secondly married Mary ‑‑‑‑‑‑ after his first wife died, since she is named as his wife in his will in Bedford Co.

There is probably a connection with the family of Joseph Graves and Elizabeth Johnson of Bedford Co., PA (gen. 8).  Joseph was born in 1795.  There is probably also a connection with the family of Jacob Banner Graves and Elizabeth Puterbaugh (gen. 945).

All their children were born in Bethel Twp., Bedford Co., PA.  (R‑1, R‑4)

CHILDREN OF SAMUEL GRAVES (1) AND ASENATH ‑‑‑‑‑‑

Joseph Graves (2) was born 7 Nov. 1763 and died 7 June 1831, both in Bethel Twp., Bedford Co., PA.  He married Elizabeth Stillwell, daughter of John Stillwell and Sarah Warford, on 27 Aug. 1797 in Bethel Twp., Bedford Co., PA.  She was born 25 Sept. 1778 and died 16 May 1826, both in Bethel Twp., Bedford Co., PA.  They were both buried in Tonoloway Baptist Cem., Fulton Co., PA.  Some of the documentation is from Bedford Co. wills and the Stillwell history.  The Stillwell family was from southern England.  All their children were born in Bethel Twp., Bedford Co., PA.  (R‑1, R‑4)

John Graves (4) was born 8 Nov. 1770 and died 10 Aug. 1840.  He married Ann ("Nancy") Thomas on 21 April 1791. She was born 16 Nov. 1771 (or 15 Oct. 1772) and died 31 July 1822.  They lived in Bedford Co., Pa.  (Who was Rebecca Graves, b.c. 20 March 1784, d. 7 Jan. 1843?  A sister of John?)  (R‑2)

Enoch Graves (8) was born in 1805 in Bedford Co., PA.  He moved to Butler Co., Ohio in 1827.  He married Mary Selby, daughter of Parker Selby and Margarette ‑‑‑‑‑‑ in 1829.  She was born about 1813 in Westmoreland Co., PA.  In 1845 they moved to Iowa and settled in Wayne Township, Henry Co.  There is information about Enoch Graves in the History of Henry Co., Mt. Pleasant, IA.  They were in the 1850 and 1860 censuses for Wayne, Henry Co., IA.  In their household in 1860 was Margarett Selby, Mary’s mother.  Enoch was a farmer.  They are said to have had 13 children but, if so, the others either left the household before 1850 or died young before they could be counted in the census.  The last 4 children were born in IA, and all the others in OH.  (R‑1, R‑5)

Joseph Graves (12) was born 7 Feb. 1792 in PA, and died 5 Feb. 1872.  He married Catharine Brosius on 14 Jan. 1817.  She was born 6 May 1794 in PA, and died 3 Nov. 1863.  She was from Holland (or perhaps her parents were from there).  They were in the 1860 and 1870 censuses for Hancock Twp., Washington Co., MD.  He was a hotel keeper in 1860.  (R‑2)

Mary Graves (13) was born 26 Dec. 1794 in PA, and died 26 Aug. 1863.  She married Joseph Powell Bowen, son of David Davis Bowen and Anna Powell, on 8 Dec. 1814 in Franklin Co., PA.  He was born 22 July 1792 in Welsh Run, Franklin Co., PA, died 18 July 1849, and was buried in Montgomery Co., OH.  Their first 7 children (with the possible exception of John and Emily) were born in PA, and the last 4 were born in Madison, Montgomery Co., OH.  (R‑3)

Graves (19) was born in Oct. 1847, and died in Aug. 1925 in Washington, DC.  She married George Thompson McKibbin, son of William McKibbin and Sarah Isabella Lee.  He was born 25 April 1839 in Philadelphia, PA, and died 7 Feb. 1919 in Buck Valley, Union Twp., Fulton Co., PA.  They were both buried in Warfordsburg Presbyterian Cem., Fulton Co., PA.  All their children were born in Buck Valley, Union Twp., Fulton Co., PA.  (R‑4)

Graves (46) was born 5 June 1823 in MD, and died 17 July 1857.  He married Lucinda Robbins (?) on 26 Sept. 1848.  They were in the 1850 census for Bath, Morgan Co., VA, and he was a tanner.  Lucinda and her children were in the 1870 census for Hancock, Washington Co., MD, when she was keeping a boarding house, and her father-in-law, Joseph, and brother-in-law, Banner, were in the household.  (R‑2)

Reedy on 17 Sept. 1850.  She was born 11 Feb. 1832 and died 19 June 1905.  They lived in Cumberland, Allegany Co., Maryland, and were buried there in Rose Hill Cem.  They were in the 1900 census for Cumberland, Ward 4, Allegany Co., MD, and he was a building contractor.  In 1900, their granddaughter Bessie Graves (daughter of James Coudy Graves), was living with them.  (R‑2)

Banner Graves Bowen (59) was born 31 Jan. 1832 in Madison, Montgomery Co., Ohio, died 14 June 1908 in Portland, Oregon, and was buried 16 June 1908 in Greenwood Hill Cem.  He married Alice Jane Lindsay, daughter of Oliver Lindsay and Elizabeth Hoffman, on 30 July 1857.  She was born 21 March 1839 in Pottstown, Montgomery Co., Pa., died 3 July 1901 in Portland, Or., and was buried 6 July 1901 in Greenwood Hill Cem.  All their children were born in Pella, Marion Co., Iowa.  (R‑3)

Ernest Lavander Graves (72) may have changed his name to Lavander Ernest Graves.  He was born 24 March 1875 in IA, died 22 Oct. 1958 in Unionville, Putnam Co., MO, and was buried in Unionville.  He married Anna M. Wilson, daughter of Leander Wilson and Elizabeth Bolander, on 3 July 1894 in Unionville, MO.  She was born about 1876 in MO, died 13 Nov. 1919 in Mystic, IA, and was buried in IA.  (R‑1, R‑5)

Joseph Albert Graves (87) was born 27 July 1849 in MD, and died 24 Feb. 1926.  He married Susan Elizabeth Sheets, perhaps called Elizabeth, about 1877.  She was born in April 1853 in PA, and died 7 Dec. 1903.  They were in the 1900 census for Meyersdale, Somerset Co., PA, he was a house carpenter, and 7 of their 9 children were living.  He was in the 1910 census for Meyersdale, Somerset Co., PA, 600 High St., listed as Albert J., 63, with children Alice and Joseph.  In 1910, he was listed as having been married a second time, but there was no wife in the household.  All their children were born in PA.  (R‑6)
