DESCENDANTS OF JOHN GREAVES OF ST. MARY'S CO., MD

GENERATION 1

John Greaves (1) died in 1748 in St. Clements, St. Mary's Co., MD.  It is not known when and where he was born, or who he married.  He belonged to the Protestant Episcopal Church.  In his will he mentioned he had a right to an estate in England.  If recovered, the estate was to be divided equally between his 2 sons and 4 daughters (then living), each paying their equal part of the charges that shall occur in recovering the estate.  John owned land on either side of St. Clements Bay, which is around Chaptico and Leonardtown, MD.

It was previously believed that John Greaves was from Densberry, England, that he arrived in St. Mary's Co., Maryland, in 1719, and that the following year he had a farm patented to him by the English government which he named "Densberry Hill" after his English home.

It was believed by some of his descendants, but not definitely established, that John Graves was the son of Rear Admiral Thomas Graves (of Thanckes, Cornwall, England) who was born in 1680, and married Mary Warne and then Elizabeth Budgell.  (This Thomas Graves is listed in genealogy 68 of the Graves family of Mickleton, Gloucestershire, England.)  Thomas Graves was the son of James Graves who was a descendant of an ancient Yorkshire family and coheir of Sir John Herdman of Stannington. Rear Admiral Thomas Graves is known to have had sons William, and Thomas who married Elizabeth Williams.  (This is not the same family as that of Rear Admiral Thomas Graves of Charlestown, Mass.)

Descendant John Wesley Graves wrote: "My father used to say there were three brothers who came over to America about Mayflower time, one an Admiral, one a Doctor or Surgeon, and one an editor."

Descendant John Edwards Graves, son of John Wesley Graves, wrote: "Three brothers left Dansbury, England in 1719.  Each received a 6000 acre land grant.  One established Dansbury (actually Danbury), Conn.; one Dansville (actually Danville), Va.; and the third Dansbury Hill, Maryland (in St. Marys Co.)."

There is a town named Denbury in Devon in southwestern England, about halfway between Ashburton and the English Channel.  This may be the same as Densberry or Dansbury. It is also interesting to note that the county of Devon is next to Cornwall where John's possible father lived.

However, the correct story is that it is not presently known when John Greaves arrived in America, nor where he came from.  1719 was the first time John applied for land certificates and had the land surveyed.  He may have been in St. Mary’s Co. for several years before that time.  Also, there is evidence that John did not name the land he owned, but that it was named by a previous owner.

It now appears that John Greaves was probably descended from William Greaves of Greenhill, parish of Norton, near Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England (genealogy 336).  This family lived generally south and west of Sheffield.  Greenhill is only about 10 miles north of Beeley, and it is possible that William Greaves was descended from the Greaves family of Beeley (genealogy 228).  William Greaves had a son, John Greaves, who was executor of his father’s will.  William also had a daughter, Catherine Greaves, who married Hugh Benson of St. Clement’s Bay, St. Mary’s Co., MD.  It is possible that John Greaves of MD was William’s son, John, but more likely (based on estimated birth dates of 1680-1690 for John and 1600 for William) he was a grandson.  The mention in the will of John of MD of a right to an estate in England probably referred to the estate of William Greaves.

The following will of John Greaves is found in Liber 25, pp. 349-354.

John Greaves (3) was born about 1708, died about 1744 in St. Clements, St. Mary’s Co., MD, and was buried in St. Clements.  He married Margaret ‑‑‑‑‑‑.  His administration accounts are dated 17 Oct. 1745, so he had died by then.  The will of his father, written in St. Mary's Co., MD in 1748, indicated that he was dead at that time.  His widow, Margaret, secondly married Mr. Lane by 1753.

It is said by R‑4 that Tabitha was a daughter by one marriage and that she had 3 half-brothers by her father’s second marriage: John, Ulyssus, and Jessie.  All the children were born in St. Clements, St. Mary’s Co., MD.  (R‑1, R‑2, R‑4, R‑12)

Elizabeth Greaves (5) was born about 1713.  She married Joshua Nelson, son of Lancelot Nelson and Mary Hewsen, about 1729.  He was born in 1700 and was baptized 8 Oct. 1700, both in Penrith, England, and died in 1744 in Northumberland Co., VA.  The will of Joshua Nelson was written in 1744, filed in St. Mary's Co., Liber TA 1, pp. 186-187, and mentions his wife Elizabeth, children Lancelot, Mary Ann, Chloe, and Seneca, and slaves.  In a codicil, he referred to a legacy from Lancelot's grandmother in England.  Joshua apparently died between the codicil date of 11 May 1744 and 9 July 1744 when the will was proved.

It is believed that his son, Lancelot, was by a previous marriage, and not by Elizabeth.

Elizabeth Greaves apparently secondly married Senecca Nelson by 1747, according to St. Mary's Co., MD Will Book 25:349 and Inventory Book 116:214.

The will of Joshua Nelson:

In the name of God Amen I Joshua Nelson of Northumberland County being sick and weak of body, but of perfect sense and memory, thanks be to God for it, do appoint this my Last Will and Testament, as touching such worldly goods as it has pleased God to bless me with I give and dispose of in the following manner and form.  I leave to Elizabeth my loving wife the use of four negroes vizt. Item: I constitute and appoint my said wife and my daughter Chloe to be the executors of this my Last Will and Testament.  In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my name and seal this 13th day of April 1744.

CHILDREN OF JESSE GRAVES (32)

John Sanders Graves (65) was born 1769 in Maryland, probably St. Marys Co.  He moved to Washington Co., KY, and then to Henderson Co. around 1798 or 1799.  In 1800 he moved to Muhlenberg Co.  He married Mary Susannah Wooton in 1800 in Muhlenberg Co., KY.  She was born 1785 in Maryland.  She was called Susannah in the marriage record and Susan in the 1850 census.  In the 1840 census, John was listed as the head of household with 6 children, and in the 1850 census, their son John was listed as head of the household, which included his brothers Jesse and William and both his parents.

Mrs. Robertson believed that John might have been a son of William Graves, as most of the children named one of their sons William.

There was a will of John Reeder made in 1806 in St. Marys Co., MD, where he willed something to John Graves and his two nephews Philip and Charles Graves who had moved to KY.  A Philip Graves did go to KY the same time as John S. Graves, and married Susanna Hunsacker (or Hensinger) on 6 April 1812 in Muhlenberg Co.  This Philip Graves may have been a nephew of John S. Graves.  Philip lived in Ohio Co., KY, next to Muhlenberg Co.  (See genealogy 784.)

Other marriages in Muhlenberg Co., KY included Peter Graves (or Groves) who married Nancy Humphrey in Dec. 1799 (could he be a brother of John Sanders Graves?), and Solomon Graves (or Groves) who married Elizabeth Dukes on 9 Feb. 1809 (possible brother of Philip?).

John S. Graves was in the 1810, 1820 and 1840 censuses for Muhlenberg Co., KY.  The 1810 census listed 1 male 26-44, 3 females under 10, 1 female 10-15, 1 female 16-25, and 1 female 26-44.  The 1820 census, page 135B, listed 3 males under 10, 1 male 45+, 1 female under 10, 2 females 10-16, and 1 female 26-45.  The family couldn’t be found in 1830. The 1840 census, page 361, listed 1 male 15-20, 3 males 20-30, 1 male 70-80, 1 female 15-20, 1 female 20-30, and 1 female 50-60.  (R‑2, R‑18)

A family story is that Wooton was working in timber with his brothers or friends, and they were rolling logs down to the Mississippi River.  On the way home from one trip they stopped at a plantation in Tennessee which was owned by a Perry family.  Mr. Perry asked them to stay and help him roll his logs down the river, and they stayed and worked for him the rest of the summer.  During their stay, Wooton became acquainted with the family and fell in love with Mr. Perry's teenage daughter Kesiah Pamelia.  When the work was finished and Wooton started to go back to Kentucky, Kesiah saddled a horse and went with him.  They were married somewhere in Tennessee without her father's permission.  At first he disowned her, but later forgave her, and for a wedding gift he gave her $500 in gold and bought her a farm in Tennessee. They lived in TN about five years, and their first two children were born there.  They then moved to Kentucky and settled in Ceralvo, where the rest of their children were born.  Their children were all married in Ceralvo, KY, except for the first (who died young) and Ezekiel, who married in TN.  (R‑2, R‑21)
