DESCENDANTS OF JOHN GRAVES AND ELIZABETH ------ OF VA & KY

GENERATION 1

John Graves (1) was born about 1801 in VA, and died after 1880. He married Elizabeth ------. She was born about 1801 in KY, and probably died before 1880. They were in the 1850 census for District 1, Boone Co., KY, house 5, page 117, with the 3 named children listed below, all born in KY John was in the 1880 census for Falmouth, Pendleton Co., KY, enumeration district 158, page 345D, age 79, with wife Ann, age 56, born in KY, and two servants. Ann was probably John's second wife. Both of John's parents were born in VA, and he was a farmer.

In the 1840 census, John was in Boone Co., KY, page 244, with 1 male less than 5, 2 males 10-15, 1 male 30-40 (him), 2 females under 5, 2 females 10-15, and 1 female 30-40 (his wife). Living next to John (also on page 244 of the census) was Joseph A. Graves, 20-30, with 1 female 20-30 (probably his wife), and 2 males under 5, 1 male 5-10, and 1 male 15-20 (perhaps a brother). Joseph may have been a brother of John. Living nearby (on page 243 of the census) was Philip Graves, age 70-80, with 1 male 10-15, 1 female 30-40, 1 female 40-50, and 1 female 60-70 (probably his wife). It is believed that Philip was either the father or an uncle of John and Joseph.

The 1830 census for Boone Co., KY, page 252, listed Philip Graves, 60-70, 1 male less than 5, 2 females 20-30, and 1 female 60-70 (his wife). Next door to him was John Graves, 20-30, 1 male less than 5, 2 females under 5, and 1 female 20-30. Next door to him was John Graves Sr., 50-60, 1 or 2 males 10-15, 1 male 15-20, 1 female 10-15, 1 female 15-20, and 1 female 40-50 (probably his wife). It is believed that John was a son of either Philip or John Sr.

It seems likely that Philip Graves and John Graves were brothers and both sons of Thomas Graves and Elizabeth ------ of Culpeper Co., VA, descended from Capt. Thomas Graves of VA (gen. 169) as follows: (1) Thomas, (2) John, (3) Thomas, (4) John, (5) John, (6) Thomas, (7) Philip and John. This Philip Graves may be the same one as in genealogy 363. If so, John Graves of this genealogy is a son of John Graves Sr. rather than of Philip Graves, since the John Graves in gen. 363 doesn't match with this John Graves. (R-1)

GENERATION 2

CHILDREN OF JOHN GRAVES (1) AND ELIZABETH ------

Thomas Henry Graves (7) was born 28 April 1836 in KY, and died 14 July 1893. He lived in Falmouth, Pendleton Co., KY. There is some question about his date of death. On the Kentucky GenWeb site (at http://www.rootsweb.com /~kypendle/willpaper2.html) is an excerpt from the Williamstown Courier, Thursday, July 13, 1893: "C.M. Hall appointed admr. of Thomas Graves." The death date would probably have been before the date of this notice.

Thomas married Sarilda A. Stephens on 17 July 1860. She was born about 1844 in KY. In the 1880 census for Falmouth, Pendleton Co., KY, page 333D, district 1, enumeration district 158, Thomas was listed as a farmer, both parents born in VA, with his wife and 9 children, all born in KY. (R-1)
