GENERATION 2

CHILDREN OF JOHN GREAVES (1)

Samuel Greaves (2) was born about 1829 in Stockport, near Manchester, England, and died 6 Aug. 1861 at the age of 31 of tuberculosis. His occupation had been overlooker in a cotton factory. His grave is still marked in the now derelict church yard at Heaton Norris, though difficult to find as there is a tree growing out of it.

He married Sarah Faulkner on 25 Dec. (Christmas day) 1851 at Manchester Cathedral. They were both unmarried, Samuel an overlooker, Sarah unemployed. Both were living in Birch Street, Ardwick. Samuel signed the register, Sarah left her mark; witnesses were John Clarkson and Emma Faulkner. By 1854 they were living at 4 Sandy Lane, Heaton Norris. Sarah was born about 1830 in Stockport, daughter of Isaac Faulkner, spinner.

By 1861, they were living at Greg Street, Reddish, and Samuel died soon after. In 1871, Sarah and her daughter, Mary Ellen, were living at 4 Wrights Court, Heaton Norris, both listed as cotton mill workers. Sarah did remarry after Samuel's death, and died as Sarah Rogers on 30 July 1894 at the age of 63.

Although only one child is known, it is possible Samuel and Sarah could have had more. (R-1)
