DESCENDANTS OF GEORGE GRAVES AND MARY ANN ------ OF CUCKFIELD, SUSSEX & CROYDON, SURREY, ENGLAND

GENERATION 1

George Graves (1) was born about 1822 in Cuckfield, Sussex, England, and died by 1861.  He was almost certainly the George Graves in the 1841 census for Broadwater, Sussex, 19, apprentice millwright.  Also in the 1841 census for Broadwater were George Graves, 70, milkman, and his wife Mary, 70, and these may have been the grandparents of George.  There were no other Graves people in Broadwater in 1841, nor were there any listed in Cuckfield.  George married Mary Ann ‑‑‑‑‑‑.  She was born about 1821 in Horton, Northamptonshire.  They were in the 1851 census for Croydon, Surrey.  His occupation was fly master.  (A fly is a one-horse two-wheeled light carriage.  A fly master is the same as a fly proprietor -- a person with funds who makes a living by employing fly drivers and hiring out flys.)  Because of the same occupation in the same place, George Graves may be related to Thomas Graves of genealogy 422.

Mary Ann was listed as a widow in the 1861, 1871, and 1881 censuses for Croydon, Surrey, with her occupation as fly proprietor, employing 20 men in 1881.  Daughter Mary was born in Middlesex, and all the other children were born in Croydon, Surrey.
