Rev. 12 May 2008, Gen. 441
DESCENDANTS OF ------
GRAVES AND HANNAH ------ OF TN & IL
GENERATION 1
‑‑‑‑‑‑
Graves (1) was probably born about 1790 in TN or VA, and had apparently died by
1850, since he was not in the 1850 census with his wife. He married Hannah ‑‑‑‑‑‑. She was born about 1793 in KY. The family apparently lived in TN, probably
Sumner Co., before moving to IL.
The 1850 census for Williamson Co.,
IL, page 225, shows the following. It
first appeared that this might be two families combined, since there are two
people close to the same age named Elisabeth.
However, it is now believed that the second Elisabeth (age 21) is the
widow of a deceased son, and all the children are probably those of
Hannah. A second possibility is that
Elisabeth through Calvin are Hannah’s children, and the last 3 children listed
are those of someone else (perhaps her sister). A third, less likely, possibility is that Hannah was the
grandmother of some of the children.
Hannah Graves 57/F KY
Elisabeth Graves 22/F TN
Elisa Graves 19/F TN
Carroll Graves 18/M TN
Calvin Graves 16/M TN
Elisabeth Graves 21/F IL
Adaline Graves 14/F TN
Hugh Graves 11/M IL
Although the 1850 census only lists
Carroll Graves, it is believed this is the same as Thomas C. Graves, and that
his full name was Thomas Carroll Graves.

GENERATION 2
CHILDREN OF ------ GRAVES (1)
AND HANNAH ------
Eliza Graves (3) was born about
1831 in TN. She married ‑‑‑‑‑‑
Barnet. He probably died by 1860, since
she was in the 1860 census for Twp. 9, Range 4, Williamson Co., IL, with 2
children, both born in IL, her mother Hannah, 68, and her brother Hugh, 21.
Children - Barnet
9. Charles C. Barnet, b.c. 1857.
10. Mary E. Barnet, b.c. 1859.
Thomas Carroll Graves (4) was born
about 1832 in TN, and apparently died before 1880, since he wasn’t in that
census with his wife. He married Mary ‑‑‑‑‑‑. She was born about 1832 in IL. They were in the 1860 census for Twp. 9,
Range 4, Williamson Co., IL. The family
was in the 1880 census for District 108, Douglas Twp., Saline Co., IL, page
54B. Thomas was a farmer. All their children were born in IL, at least
the first 3 in Crab Orchard, Williamson Co., IL, which is about 5 miles
southeast of Pittsburg, IL. (R‑3)
Children - Graves
+11. Hugh Albert Graves, b. 24 July 1853, m. Mary Elizabeth Sapp, 11
March 1875, d. 10 Jan. 1894.
12. Thomas J. Graves, b.c. 1857.
13. James W. Graves, b.c. 1859.
14. Hannah Graves, b.c. 1863.
15. Sarah Graves, b.c. 1866.
Calvin A. Graves (5) was born about
1834 in TN (or KY). He married Mildred
A. ‑‑‑‑‑‑.
She was born about 1837 in TN.
The 1860 census for Twp. 9, Range 4 East, Williamson Co., IL lists
Calvin and Mildred with children Emily H., 4, and Nancy C., 2. None of those children can be found in the 1870
census. There is a record in the 1870
census for Twp. 9, Range 4, Williamson Co., IL for Calvin Graves (indexed as
Groves) and wife Matilda (not Mildred), with children Ellen, 14, Sarah, 12,
John, 10, Thomas, 8, and William, 6.
None of those children can be found in the 1880 census. The 1880 census for Rock Creek Twp.,
Williamson Co., IL, page 455B, lists Calvin Graves, 46, with wife Mildred, 36,
both born in TN, no children.
It is interesting to see that
living next to Calvin Graves in the 1860 census was the family of Eli H.
Graves, son of William Graves and Catherine Richmond (genealogy 13).
Children - Graves
16. Emily H. Graves, b.c. 1856.
17. Nancy C. Graves, b.c. 1858.
Adaline Graves (7) was born about
1836 in TN. She married James (“Jim”) Harris. He was born about 1828 in IL. Both his parents were born in KY.
They were in the 1880 census for
District 108, Douglas Twp., Saline Co., IL, page 46B. Her name was spelled Addiline in that census. The puzzling thing about the 1880 census listing
is that 4 children are listed, William, 19, Abul (Able?), 16, Sarah, 11, and
Darthula, 9, all born in IL, with both parents listed as born in IL. Since Adaline was born in TN (according to
the 1850 census), it looks likely that James Harris had been married before,
and Adaline was his second wife. The
census then lists James Adams, 24, stepson, widowed, born in IL, father born in
IL, mother born in TN. Living with the
family is also Cora Adams, 7, niece, and John Adams, 2, nephew. Although these last two could be niece and
nephew of James Harris, it seems more likely that they are the children of
James Adams and his deceased wife.
Although James Adams could be a stepson of James by a first wife, it
seems more likely that he is a son of Adaline by her first marriage. A search of 1860 and 1870 census records
should resolve this issue. The 1860
census for Twp. 9, Range 4 E, Williamson Co., IL, listed James R. Adams, 29,
Nancy E. Adams, 25, James C. Adams, 4, and other children, so the James Adams, born about 1856, does not
seem to be a child of Adaline.
Children - Adams
18. James Adams, b.c. 1856 (IL), m. ‑‑‑‑‑‑. 2 children.
Hugh Madison (“Huey” of “Hughy”)
Graves (8) was born about 1840 in southern IL, and died in a hospital in Little
Rock, AR, while living in Marmaduke, Greene Co., AR (northeast AR). He supposedly married Henrietta Turner in
1859. However, he was living with his
mother in 1860, and in 1870 and 1880 his wife was Mary, not Henrietta. Some people have given her name as Mary
Henrietta, but no evidence for that has been found.
Hugh Graves, with brother Calvin
and sister Adaline, is said to have crossed the Ohio River on ice in a 14-wagon
caravan from TN to Marion, Williamson Co., IL about the 1840’s. Calvin and Adaline went to TX, and Adaline
married Jim Harris. Hugh raised 2
families (unknown what this means) in Marion, and eventually moved to
Paragould, Greene Co., AR.
Hugh and Mary were in the 1870
census for Twp. 9, Range 4, Williamson Co., IL, Crab Orchard P.O. In the 1880 census for Rock Creek Twp.,
Williamson Co., IL, page 458D, house 427, and page 453A, house 249, H. M.
Graves is listed, 40, with wife Mary A. Graves, 35, and most of the children
listed below, all born in IL. The pages
were apparently put in the wrong order, and the house numbers were added later,
causing the two parts of this family to appear on non-consecutive pages. Hugh was a farmer.
Some of Hugh’s children and their
families stayed in IL and some moved to AR.
