DESCENDANTS OF SIDNEY GRAVES AND MARIAH ------ OF GILMER, GUILFORD CO., NC

 

 

GENERATION 1

 

Sidney Graves (1) was born between 1814 and 1826 in NC, based on his age in the 1870 and 1880 censuses, and died between 24 April 1883 and 14 Dec. 1887[1], probably in Gilmer, Guilford Co., NC.  He first married Mariah (or Maria) ‑‑‑‑‑‑.  She was recorded as a 25-year old in 1870 and a 55-year old in 1880.  Since her oldest child was born about 1856 and her last about 1878, a probable birth date would be about 1840.  She also died after 1880.  This family was recorded on the 1870 census in Gilmer Township, Guilford Co., NC, post office Westminster, and on the 1880 census in Gilmer, NC.  All their children were born in NC.  He married second Esther Dick on 24 April 1883 in Greensboro, Guilford Co., NC.  Although his age was recorded as 86, he is the only Sidney Graves recorded in this area.  His parents names’ were recorded as Jesse Slade and Cilla Graves on his marriage record.  Esther, also spelled Easter, was born about 1823 in VA; she was recorded as age 60 on her marriage record.  In 1880, she lived in the household of Greene Galloway[2] in Gilmer, NC; her age was recorded as 55.

GENERATION 2

 

CHILDREN OF SIDNEY GRAVES (1) AND MARIA ‑‑‑‑‑‑

Silas Madison Graves (2) was born about 1852 in NC[3], died 21 March 1936 in Greensboro, Guilford Co., NC at 1930 E. Market St., and was buried in Elm Street Cem[4].  He was shown as age 14 in 1870 and 29 in 1880.  The 1900 census shows his month and year of birth as Nov. 1850.  He first married Sarah (“Sallie”) ‑‑‑‑‑‑ Roswell (or Rozzell) on 1 June 1876 in Guilford Co., NC[5].  She was born about 1846 in SC, and died between 1880 and 14 Dec. 1887.  They were recorded on the 1880 census in Gilmer, Guilford Co., NC; his stepsons Henry Rozzell [sic] and Hezekiah Rozzell [sic] lived with them.

Silas married second Lizzie Morehead, daughter of Sidney Morehead and Anna ‑‑‑‑‑‑, on 14 Dec. 1887 in Guilford Co., NC[6].  She was born in Jan. 1868 in NC according to the 1900 census, and died about 1910.  This family was recorded on the 1900 census in Gilmer, NC; their children were born in NC.  In 1900, Lizzie stated that three of her seven children were living; at least four more were born between 1900 and 1910.

Silas married third Letha Galloway, daughter of Rebecca Orrel, on 7 Nov. 1911 in Guilford Co., NC[7].  She was born about 1862.

Silas married fourth Rachel Chavis, daughter of Edward Watson and Cindy Walker, on 21 Sept. 1915 in Guilford Co., NC.  She was born in Sept. 1878 in Orange Co., NC, died 5 Aug. 1962 in Greensboro, NC, and was buried in Maplewood Cem.  They were in the 1930 census for Greensboro, Guilford Co., NC, with children Otis Graves, 25, Vinnie Graves, 25, Roberta Graves, 23, Charles Graves, 17, and adopted son E. J. Kirkpatric, 13, living with them.

    12.   Bessie Graves, b. May 1889, m. Walter Dick, d. aft. 1940.  He was b.c. 1893 in NC, and died before the 1940 census.  They were in the 1930 census for Greensboro, Guilford Co., NC, with niece Beverly Graves, b.c. 1928, and Bessie’s sister Nellie.  Bessie was widowed and living with her brother Otis in 1940.

    13.   Nellie Graves, b. Jan. 1897.

    14.   Sandy Lorenzo Graves, b. 13 Nov. 1898, m. Hattie Wiley, 24 Aug. 1918 (Guilford Co., NC), d. 1 Dec. 1973 (Greensboro, NC).  Bur. Maplewood Cem.

    15.   Otis Flavors Graves, b. 27 Jan. 1903, m. Annie ‑‑‑‑‑‑, d. 30 Sept. 1963.  Bur. Maplewood Cem.  He was in the 1940 census for Greensboro, Guilford Co., NC, widowed, with his sister Bessie living with him.  She was listed as Bessie Dick, married, but there was a line through her surname, and a line through M (for married), with the letter S written in.

    16.   Roberta Graves, b.c. 1906, m. Cordoner Totten, 23 Dec. 1924 (Guilford Co., NC).

+17.   Silas Everett Graves, b. 29 Oct. 1909, m(1) Lula Stroud, 3 Feb. 1930, m(2) Beatrice Reid, d. 10 Aug. 1978.

    18.   Charles Graves, b.c. 1913.

 

Jesse Graves (3) was born 11 Nov. 1859 in NC[8], died 19 Jan. 1927 in Gilmer, Greensboro, Guilford Co., NC[9], and was buried in Maplewood Cem., Greensboro, NC.  He first married Mary E. Jones, daughter of Lebron R. Jones and Martha Jeffries, on 3 Jan. 1883 in Gilmer, NC.  She was born about 1864 in NC[10], and died 20 Nov. 1921 in Gilmer, NC.  They were buried in Maplewood Cem., Greensboro, NC.  This family was recorded on the 1900, 1910, and 1920 censuses in Greensboro, NC.  He was a railroad porter in 1900.  All their children were born in NC.  The dates of birth of the first 4 children are from the 1900 census; it is unusual for a census record to show the complete date.  He married second Martha Fulford on 24 May 1922 in Guilford Co., NC[11].  She was born about 1888.

Martha Graves (6) was born about 1867 or 1864 in Caswell Co., NC, and died 30 Oct. 1920 in Gilmer, Guilford Co., NC[12].  She married Hinton Bass 13 Feb. 1882 in Gilmer, Guilford Co., NC[13], marriage performed by O.H. Evans, minister.  He was born about 1862 in NC.  They were in the 1900 census for Gilmer, Guilford Co., NC, when 7 of their 8 children were still living, and Hinton was a wood cutter.  They were living near her brother Silas in 1900.

    28.   Lorenzo (“Ren”) Bass, b. March 1895, m. Mamie ‑‑‑‑‑‑.  He was living with his aunt Henrietta in the 1910 census.  He and Mamie were in the 1920 census for Richmond, VA.

    29.   William Bass, b. March 1896.

    30.   Maude Bass, b. Feb. 1899, d. 16 Jan. 1916[14].

 

Henrietta Graves (7) was born in Aug. 1869 in Caswell Co., NC, died 23 June 1946 in Gilmer, Greensboro, Guilford Co., NC[15], and was buried in Maplewood Cem.  She first married ‑‑‑‑‑‑ Cardwell (or Oardwell).  She was recorded on the 1910 census in Gilmer, NC as Henrietta Oardwell, 35-year old widow, with Charlie Haskins, 6, grandson, and Lorenza Bass, 15, nephew (son of her sister Martha).  She married second Richard Matier (or McTier), son of Gilbert Matier, on 2 July 1915 in Greensboro, NC[16].  He was born about 1860 in NC.  They were recorded on the 1920 census in Gilmer Twp., Guilford Co., NC.  Living with them was her grandson, Charlie Haskin [sic], age 18.  His full name was Charlie Haywood Haskins.  On his death certificate, his father was not known and his mother was Nettie Morehead.  It is unclear how they are related to Henrietta.

 

Jennie Graves (8) was born about 1871 in NC.  She first married Pharoah Womack, son of Gilbert Womack and Lucinda Womack, on 9 March 1887 in Gilmer, Guilford Co., NC[17].  He was born about 1862.  He married second Fannie B. Miller on 27 Dec. 1894 in Guilford Co., NC.  Jennie married second William Wharton, son of Ervin Wharton and Jennie Wharton, on 9 April 1892 in Guilford Co., NC.  He was born about 1869 in NC, and died before the 1900 census.  Jennie was in the 1900 census for Gilmer, Guilford Co., NC, widowed, living near her brother Silas, with 3 of her 8 children still living, Cora and Sidney by her first marriage, and Lucy (or Lavey) by her second marriage, all recorded with the Wharton name.

    32.   Sidney Womack, b. May 1888, m. Alice Moore, 28 Aug. 1909 (Guilford Co., NC).  Alice was b.c. 1886, daughter of George Moore and Alice Moore.

    33.   Lucy (or Lacey) Wharton, b. Aug. 1897.

 

Charles Graves (9) was born about 1874 in NC, and died between 1897 and 1900[18].  He married Cora Bird (or Byrd), daughter of Warren Bird and Letitia McAdoo, on 26 June 1894 in Guilford Co., NC[19].  She was born in April 1877, and died after 1940.  She and her sons were recorded on the 1900 census in Gilmer, Guilford Co., NC living with her brother Robert Bird.  She married second Jerry Slade, son of Nathaniel Slade and Harriet Johnston, on 22 July 1908 in Guilford Co., NC[20].  He was born 15 Dec. 1879[21] in Yanceyville, Caswell Co., NC, died 14 April 1937 in Greensboro, Guilford Co., NC, and was buried in Maplewood Cem., Greensboro, NC[22].  They were recorded on the 1910 census in Gilmer, Guilford Co., NC with her sons Charlie and Alex.  In 1910, son ‘Alec’ and daughter-in-law Bessie were recorded with Cora and Jerrie [sic] in Gilmer, NC.  In 1940, ‘Lora’ [sic] was recorded on 222 Booker St., Greensboro, NC.

CHILDREN OF SILAS M. GRAVES (2)

Silas Everett (or Everett Silas) Graves (24) was born 29 Oct. 1909 in Greensboro, Guilford Co., NC, died 10 Aug. 1978, and was buried in Piedmont Memorial Park, all in Greensboro, Guilford Co., NC.  He first married Lula Stroud on 3 Feb. 1930 in Danville, VA.  He married second Beatrice Reid.  Silas and Lula were in the 1940 census for Greensboro, Guilford Co., NC, with sons Jerrod and George, step-mother Rachael Graves, 68, widowed, and step-brother Charlie Chavis, 38.

CHILDREN OF CHARLES GRAVES (9) AND CORA BIRD

Alexander (“Alex”) Farrington Graves (35) was born 29 May 1898 in Guilford Co., NC, and died 16 Nov. 1968 in Waterbury, New Haven Co., CT.  He married Bessie Peteler, daughter of Robert Peteler and Loula ‑‑‑‑‑‑, on 19 May 1918 in Guilford Co., NC[23].  She was born about 1901 in NC, and died on 4 March 1975 in Waterbury, CT.  This family was recorded on the 1930 and 1940 censuses in Waterbury, CT; their children were born in Guilford Co., NC.

    38.   Lucille Graves, b. 6 April 1920, m. Cadimus Sanders, d. aft. 1954.  One son Cadimus Jr., b.c. 1939 (CT).

    39.   Alexander Farrington Graves, Jr., b. 13 May 1925, d. 20 March 2007.

    40.   Fletcher E. Graves, b. 4 Oct. 1927, m. Myrtle Petty, d. 26 Oct. 1995 (Waterbury, CT).  Myrtle was b. 10 Jan. 1927 (NC), daughter of Ellis Petty and Dockanna Sturdivant, d. 7 Aug. 1992 (Waterbury, CT).
