DESCENDANTS OF JOSEPH GRAVES AND BETSEY VITTUM OF SANDWICH, CARROLL CO., NH

GENERATION 1

Joseph Graves (1) was born about 1799 in NH, and died 30 Nov. 1862 at age 63. He married Betsey Vittum, daughter of John Vittum and Elizabeth Mudgett, on 25 Dec. 1817, by Rev. Samuel Hidden. She was born about 1798 in NH, and died 8 May 1885 at age 86 years, 5 months, 25 days. They lived in Sandwich, Carroll Co., NH. They were in the 1850 and 1860 censuses for Sandwich, NH. He was a blacksmith. All their children seem to have been born in NH.

Carroll Co., NH was formed in 1840 from Strafford Co., NH, one of the original counties. A search of the census records before 1850 shows Joseph Graves in Sandwich, Strafford Co., NH in 1840. In 1830 he was in Allenstown, Merrimack Co., NH, about 60 miles south of Sandwich, with 2 sons and 2 daughters. In 1820 there was a Joseph Graves in Deerfield, Rockingham Co., NH, with 1 male under 5, 1 male 16-26, and 1 female 16-26. In 1810 there was a William Mudgett, William Mudgett Jr., and a William Graves in Deerfield, NH. In the 1800 census there was a Joseph Graves, b. 1756-1774, with 1 son under 10 who could have been the Joseph b.c. 1799. The Graves family members of Deerfield seem to be the part of genealogy 165, descended from William Graves of Dover, NH, but it is not obvious how the Joseph Graves, b.c. 1799, connects. The Joseph and William Graves in the Deerfield census records may be the ones in genealogy 165 who were sons of Joseph Graves who was born 1742 in Brentwood, NH, and first married Lydia Taylor. 6. Oliver Graves, b.c. 1830.

Ross C. Graves (2) was born 25 Jan. 1820 in NH, and died 12 March 1883. He married Dorothy A. (“Dolly”) ‑‑‑‑‑‑. She was born about 1826 in NH, and died 27 March 1908 at age 86. They were in the 1850, 1860 and 1870 censuses for Sandwich, Carroll Co., NH. He was a farmer. (R‑1, R‑2)

Russell Graves (3) was born about 1822 in NH. He married Mary Ann Libby in Salem, MA. She was born about 1821, probably in Maine, and died at age 88 in Meredith, NH. They were in the 1850 census for Tamworth, Carroll Co., NH. They were in the 1860 and 1870 censuses for Sandwich, Carroll Co., NH. He was a farmer. (R‑1, R‑2)

16. George R. Graves, b.c. 1846, d. 12 Dec. 1862. This death date may be wrong, since it is from R‑2 and states he died at 16 months.

Susan Graves (7) was born about 1834 in NH. She married James Cook. (R‑1)

Otis Graves (8) was born in May 1839 in NH. He first married Mary ‑‑‑‑‑‑. She was born about 1845 in Ireland. He married second Bridget ‑‑‑‑‑‑ about 1877. She was born in July 1854 in Ireland (according to the 1900 census). It seems very likely that his wives were sisters, considering that they were both born in Ireland, and a daughter by his first wife was named Bridget. He was in the 1860, 1870, 1880, and 1900 censuses for the village of Summit, town of Lyons, Cook Co., IL, in the first 2 with wife Mary and in the second 2 with wife Bridget. He was termed a blacksmith in the first 3 censuses and a farrier in 1900. It appears that at least his daughter Susie and all subsequent children were by his second marriage and Joe and all previous children were by his first marriage, but it is not certain whether Elma was by Mary or Bridget. All his children were born in IL.

They were in the 1880 census for Chelmsford, Middlesex Co., MA, when he was a manufacturer. All their children were born in MA.

Aubrey M. Graves (10) was born in May 1843, and died 23 Feb. 1920. His name was given as Oliver in the 1860 census when he was still living with his parents, but it was given correctly in all other censuses. He married Louise S. Sanborn. She was born about 1849 in NH, and died in 1928. They were in the 1870 census for Sandwich, Carroll Co., NH. He was a farmer. (R‑1, R‑2)

Isaac Graves (13) was born about 1856 in NH, and died in 1949. His name was incorrectly given as Hacker F. Graves in the 1860 census. He first married Clara B. Donovan. She was born in 1858 and died in 1885. He married second Lizzie Hodgdon. (R‑1, R‑2)
