DESCENDANTS OF JAMES GRAVES OF WYMONDHAM, NORFOLK, ENGLAND

GENERATION 1

James Graves (1) was born about 1776 in Wmondham, Norfolk, England, and probably died before 1861 in East Molesey, Surrey.  He married Ann Langran, a widow whose first husband, Joseph Langran, died in 1804 in East Molesey, Surrey.  James is reported to have been much younger than Ann.  She apparently died before 1841, since the 1841 census for East Molesey shows James Graves, 65, and Catherine Langran, 40, apparently a daughter by AnnŐs first marriage.  James and Catherine were also in the 1851 census for East Molesey, Surrey, with James as a master baker.  It is not known whether they had more than the one son.

A family story is that locally James Graves was known as Ňthe midnight baker.Ó  He was said to be fond of his tiple.  Baking was, of course, thirst work.  According to one family member, James Graqves used to be so behind with his work that often he did not deliver until his customers were in bed.  Bread was apparently left on closet seats.  In those days, such conveniences were left in the garden.  LetŐs hope the bread was well wrapped.  Judging by the census returns, that Langran-Graves family had the monoply as regards bread making in those villages.  Their customers had no choice, and so perhaps that is why the businesses continued despite reputed erratic service.  Their baking business apparently provided bread to the royalty living at nearby Hampton Court Palace.

This family may be related to genealogy 198 for Richard Graves and Isabella ‑‑‑‑‑‑ of Hingham and Norwich, Norfolk, since some of that family also lived in Wymondham, Norfolk.  (R1)
