DESCENDANTS OF WILLIAM CHARLES GREAVES AND ANNA SCHUCHARST OF MANCHESTER, ENGLAND AND NJ

GENERATION 1

William Charles Greaves (1) was born about 1877 in Manchester, Lancashire, England, and died in 1920 in NJ.  He married Anna Rose Schucharst, daughter of George E. William Schuchardt and Marie Reiter, about 1901[1].  She was born in Oct. 1876 in PA, and died in 1948 in Hoboken, Hudson Co., NJ.  They were in the 1910 census for Jersey City, Hudson Co., NJ, with all 4 of their children still living.  He immigrated to the U.S. in 1900.  He was a diamond setter in a shop in 1910.  Both her parents were born in Germany.  She was in the 1920 census for Hoboken, Hudson Co., NJ, with all 5 of her children, her name listed as Hanna, and their surname listed as Greeves.  William wasnÕt with the family in 1920, although his wife was listed as married; perhaps he had already died.  All their children were born in NJ.

There are a number of records from the source of much of this information that donÕt seem to make much sense, including that William was listed in the Electoral Register, 48 Woodsome Road, Parish of St. Pancras, London, England, in 1884, yet how is that possible when he would only have been 7 years old then.  He and Anna are also said to have married on 10 July 1897 in Lanchester, County Durham, England, but that seems unlikely; that record and a World War I pension record seem to be for a Charles William Greaves of Durham..

There is a famikly story that the family name was originally Hargreaves but was shortened to Greaves because of a bankruptcy.  In the 1881 census for Lancashire, there was a William Charles Hargreaves, born about 1880 in Lancashire, son of Philip Hargreaves (gas stoker), and a William Hargreaves, born about 1877 in Manchester, Lancashire, son of John H. Hargreaves (general labourer), but neither of these seem likely candidates.  There was a William Greaves, born about 1879 in Manchester, son of John Greaves (carter) and Celia Gilmore.

In the 1891 census for Lancashire was William Hargreaves (cotton hooker), born about 1877 in Manchester, son of Henry Hargreaves (labourer).  A search in the immigration records on Ancestry.com was unsuccessful.  (R‑1)
