DESCENDANTS OF RICHARD GRAVES AND SUSAN COWLING OF ASHDON, ESSEX, ENGLAND

GENERATION 1

Richard Graves (1) was born about 1802 and died in 1880 at age 78, both in Ashdon, Essex.  He may have been a son of a Thomas Graves.  He married Susan Cowling on 1 June 1843 in All Saints, Castle Camps, Cambridgeshire[1].  She was born 28 Dec. 1821 in Castle Camps, Cambridgeshire.  Their first child was born in Castle Camps, and all the others in Ashdon, Essex.  They were in the 1851 and 1861 censuses for Ashdon, Essex, with her widowed mother living with them in 1851.  He was in the 1871 census for Ashdon, without Susan.  He was an agricultural labourer.  Susan was in the 1841 census for Castle Camps, living with her mother Mary cowling, 50, presumably widowed, and her brothers and sisters.  Richard could not be found in the 1841 census.  Their first child, Ann, was born in Castle Camps, Cambridgeshire, and al the others were born in Ashdon, Essex.  There is a possibility that Ann was not a daughter of Richard.
