DESCENDANTS OF MARY ANN GRAVES AND JOHN BYNE LUMPKIN OF NC & GA

GENERATION 1

Mary Ann Graves (1) was born about 1810 in NC (according to the 1850 census for Burke Co., GA), and apparently died before 1860.  She married John Byne Lumpkin, son of Philip Lumpkin and Mary (or Sarah) Byne, on 23 Nov. 1828 in Crawford Co., GA.  He was born about 1805 in Burke Co., GA, and died before 7 May 1855.  He was apparently a widower at the time of his death, since there are several instances in Burke Co., GA Minutes of the Court of Ordinary of his minor children choosing guardians.  In one, Mary Jane Lumpkin asks that Elton Hodges be her guardian.  They were in the 1850 census for Burke Co., GA, when all the children listed below were living with them.  He was a farmer.  All their children were born in GA.  (R‑1, R‑2)

GENERATION 2

CHILDREN OF MARY A. GRAVES (1) AND JOHN B. LUMPKIN

Joseph L. Lumpkin (2) was born about 1833 in GA, died in 1907 in GA, and was buried in Moxley Cem., Swainsboro, Emanuel Co., GA.  He first married Ann E. ‑‑‑‑‑‑, perhaps 1850-1855, in GA.  She was born about 1831 in GA.  It is possible that she was the Eliza Attaway, 19, in the 1850 census for Burke Co., GA, and Augustus Arnold, 1, was the first child listed below, and therefore probably not a child of Joseph Lumpkin.  It is apparent that Joseph Lumpkin was not married when the 1850 census was taken on Sept. 7, 1850, since he was still living with his parents at that time.  They were in the 1860 census for Burke Co., GA, with children Augustus and Calvin.

He married second Sarah J. Lawson on 6 Oct. 1865 in Burke Co., GA.  She was born 25 Jan. 1837 in Burke Co., GA, died 18 Nov. 1909 in Emanuel Co., GA, and was buried in Nov. 1909 in Hall Cem., Modoc, Emanuel Co., GA.  They were in the 1870 census for Jefferson Co., GA, with children Calvin, Mary and Joseph.  Augustus could not be found in any census in 1870, and perhaps he had died.  They were in the 1880 census for Jefferson Co., GA, with children Joseph, Bella and Chesley.  All his children were born in GA.  (R‑1, R‑2)

  10.  Joseph W. W. Lumpkin, b.c. 1869.

  11.  Belle Lumpkin, b.c. 1873.

+12.  Chesley Alexander Lumpkin, b. 18 May 1875, m(1) Nannie ‑‑‑‑‑‑, c. 1899, m(2) Arrie Mae ‑‑‑‑‑‑, c. 1906, d. 31 July 1925.

Joshua K. Lumpkin (5) was born about 1841 in GA.  He married Caroline Mary Reeves on 13 June 1861 in Jefferson Co., GA.  She was born about 1844 in Burke Co., GA.  The 1870 census for Burke Co., GA, listed Joshua Lumpkin, 30, with wife Caroline, 26, and son William, 3.  The 1880 census for Jefferson Co., GA, listed J. K. Lumpkin, 40, with wife Mary, and children William, 18, John, 5, Daniel, 4, and Addie, 2.  Because of the differences in name of the wife and the age of the oldest son, there is some question of whether this is the same family; perhaps it was the same family with two different wives (supported by the age gap between the first and second son).  (R‑1, R‑2)

CHILDREN OF JOSEPH L. LUMPKIN (2)

Chesley Alexander Lumpkin (12) was born 18 May 1875[1] in GA, and died 31 July 1925 in Statesboro, Bullock Co., GA.  He first married Nannie ‑‑‑‑‑‑ about 1899.  She was born in June 1874 in GA.  He married second Arrie Mae ‑‑‑‑‑‑ about 1906.  She was born about 1891 in GA.  He was in the 1900, 1910 and 1920 censuses for Emanuel Co., GA.  His family couldn’t be found in any 1930 census.  He was a farmer.  All his children were born in GA.
