DESCENDANTS OF J. C. GRAVES AND FRANCES ------ OF NC, MS & DREW CO., AR

GENERATION 1

J. C. Graves (1) was born about 1813 in NC, and probably died between 1860 and 1870.  He was in the 1860 census for Drew Co., AR, but his wife was listed as head of household in 1870, so he may have died in the Civil War.  He married Frances ‑‑‑‑‑‑.  She was born about 1829 in NC.

They have not been found in the 1850 census for MS.  They were in the 1860 census for Bearhouse Twp., Drew Co., AR, page 120, household 311, with all children listed.  The 1870 census for Bearhouse Twp., Drew Co., AR, page 555, post office Monticello, listed only Frances with children Thomas Jeff, 22, Puin (?), 17, and Jackson, 14.

Since all their children except the last one were born in MS (according to the 1860 census), they should have been found in the 1850 census, but they have not yet been found in 1850 in MS, TN or AR.  However, it was interesting that living in Marshall Co., MS, in 1850 were Elijah Graves, 23, born in NC, living in the household of Thomas B. Gatewood; Basley Graves, 26, overseer, born in NC, living in the household of Thomas G. Gatewood; William Graves, 21 farmer, born in TN, living in the household of William A. Cochran; and children Nancy Graves, 7, and Mary Graves, 1, both born in TN, living in the household of Henry C. Kirk.  Basley Graves, born about 1851, son of J. C. and Frances, married in Lafayette Co., MS, which is right next to Marshall Co. in north central MS, so these Graves family members who were in Marshall Co. in 1850 may be related to J. C. Graves.

In the 1870 census for Redland Twp., Bradley Co., AR, post office Eagle Creek, page 583, was found Baswell Graves, 38, farmer, and wife Oubrey, 31, both born in AR; Beverly Graves, 42, dry goods merchant, born in VA, wife Celia, 30, born in TN, and 3 children born in AR; and Claiborne Graves, 40, farmer, born in VA, wife Sarah, 30, born in AL, and 2 sons born in AR.  The names Basil, Baswell, and Basley have sometimes been used interchangeably, so it is interesting that there were at least 3 men with that name in the same area, born about 1824, 1832, and 1851.  The only other person with this name that has been found is Basil Graves (son of Lewis Graves, descended from Capt. Thomas Graves of VA, gen. 169) who was born about 1800, was also called Baydelial, and had a son Basil born about 1858.  The elder Basil Graves had a brother named John C. Graves who never married but could have been the namesake for J. C. Graves
