DESCENDANTS OF ANTHONY GREAVES AND ISABELLA GIBSON

GENERATION 1

 

Anthony Greaves (1) was born in 1851 in Thornley, Durham, England, and died in Houghton Le Spring, Durham, England. Although his birth in the March quarter of 1851 was registered at Easington, the 1891 census shows his birth parish as Thornley. He married Isabella Gibson, daughter of Joseph Gibson and Eliza Downey, in the September quarter of 1871 in Bishop Auckland, Durham, England. She was born about 1851 in Ipswich, Queensland, Australia, and died about 1935 in Houghton Le Spring, Durham, England.

The family has not been found in the 1881 census. The 1891 census showed that Anthony was a mason, aged 39, and Isabella, his Australian born wife, was 35. Their family consisted of John E., 17, Liddle, 15, coal miners, and Catherine, 8, scholar, all born in the Spennymoor parish, Anthony, 6, scholar, and William, 1, both born at Dubmire, Newbottle. They were living in George Street, Dubmire. Another daughter, Gertrude Isabella, was born in the June quarter of 1893 in the Houghton-Le-Spring district. (R-1)

CHILDREN OF ANTHONY GREAVES (1) AND ISABELLA GIBSON

Anthony Greaves (5) was born 5 March 1885 in Dubmire, Newbottle, Durham, England, and died 1 Oct. 1957 in Wallsend, New South Wales, Australia. He married Elizabeth Raine, daughter of Joseph Hunter Raine and Jane Ann Tate, in 1906 in Houghton Le Spring, Durham, England. She was born 1 March 1885 in Shiney Row, Durham, England, and died in 1958 in Newcastle, NSW, Australia. Anthony migrated to Australia in 1913, leaving his wife and children behind until he could afford to have them follow him. The family was reunited in 1915 in Newcastle, NSW. Their first 3 children were born in Newbottle, Durham, England, and the next 2 in Waratah, NSW, Australia. (R-1)

William Gibson Greaves (6) was born in May 1890 in Dubmire, Newbottle, Durham, England. He married ------. William served as an observer in the Royal Flying Corps in World War I. After the war, he and his sister Catherine migrated to Canada. (R-1)
