DESCENDANTS OF JAMES GRAVES AND MARTHA BENNET OF VT & NY

GENERATION 1

James Graves (1) was born about 1798 in VT, and died after 1860.  He married Martha Bennet.  She was born about 1799 in NY.  They were in the 1840 and 1850 censuses in Fort Edward, Washington Co., NY.  In the 1860 census for Fort Edward, James was living by himself next to daughter Elizabeth, and Martha was living with daughter Jane.  James was a farmer.  All their children were born in NY.

James is probably descended from Eliad Graves and Abigail Clark, descended from John Graves of Concord, MA (genealogy 166).  Some of this family lived in Ferrisburgh, Addison Co., VT, which may be where James Graves was born.  That is the only Graves family where the unusual name of Eliad Graves has been found.  (R‑1)

CHILDREN OF JAMES GRAVES (1) AND MARTHA BENNET

Eliad Graves (2) was born about 1822 in NY.  His name has been given as Laird Graves is some sources, but Eliad (or Eliud) appears correct since he was buried in the same plot in Union Cem., Fort Edward, NY, as “Mary A.” (daughter) and Eliza A. (wife), and his name was given there as Eliud.  He married Eliza Ann Gillett.  She was born about 1827 in NY.  They were in the 1860 census for Fort Edward, Washington Co., NY, living next to Peter Bennett, 36, tailor, Ireland.  They were in the 1870 census for Fort Edward, Washington Co., NY.  He was a farmer in 1860, and a boatman in 1870.  Living next to him in 1870 was Mortimer and Martha Case, both 57, NY.  Nearby were Alfred and Emily Case.  Both Mortimer and Alfred were brothers of John Case.  (R‑1)
