DESCENDANTS OF REUBEN GRAVES AND POLLY ------ OF CT & MADISON CO., NY

GENERATION 1

Reuben Graves (1) was born about 1780 in CT.  He married Polly ‑‑‑‑‑‑.  She was born about 1783 in CT.  They were in the 1850 census for Sullivan, Madison Co., NY.  The list of their children is probably not complete and needs more evidence to prove they are theirs.  The connections are based partly on all the families living close to each other in 1850.

GENERATION 2

CHILDREN OF REUBEN GRAVES (1) AND POLLY ------

Hiram Graves (2) was born about 1811 in NY.  He appears to have married three times, based on census records.  He first married Maria ‑‑‑‑‑‑.  She was born about 1809 in NY.  They were in the 1850 census for Sullivan, Madison Co., NY.  He married second Caroline ‑‑‑‑‑‑.  She was born about 1828 in NY.  They were in the 1860 census for Sullivan, Madison Co., NY.  He married third Helen J. ‑‑‑‑‑‑.  She was born about 1839 in NY or Canada.  Her parents were born in Ireland.  They were in the 1870 and 1880 censuses for Sullivan, Madison Co., NY.  Hiram was a carpenter.  All his children were born in NY.

The connection between Hiram Graves and Alma Graves, his presumed daughter, is not yet proven.  Since Alma was already married in 1850, she was not in that census with her parents.  The 1855 NY state census shows a sister, Amanda Graves, living with Edwin and Alma Wells.  Also, looking at the 1840 census for NY, the household headed by a Hiram Graves most likely to be this one was in Tompkins Co., NY, and it listed 2 females under 5 (probably Emiline and Amanda) and 1 female 5-10 (probably Alma).  However, none of the evidence is conclusive, and further research is being conducted.

Delors and Charles were in the Buffalo, NY directory as early as 1870.  Ralph and Eliza were on the census records for Sullivan, Madison Co., NY from 1840 through 1890, but neither was listed on the Madison Co. census in 1892.  (R‑1)

GENERATION 2

CHILDREN OF HIRAM GRAVES (2)

Alma Obedience Graves (6) was born about 1832-33 in Onondaga Co., NY, and died 30 March 1909.  Alma married Edwin L. Wells, probably about 1849.  He was born in MA, and died 1 July 1887 in Canastota, Madison Co., NY.

As mentioned in the paragraph for her presumed father, Hiram Graves, the connection between Alma and Hiram is not yet proven.  Further research is being conducted.

Alberta Page wrote: "According to my mother, Alma Obedience Graves was "bound out" at the age of 10-11 to a Thomas Petrie family in Peterboro, NY.  They were farmers.  Edwin and Alma farmed and eventually moved to Canastota, NY.

The 1855 NY state census shows a sister Amanda Graves living with them.  Also, from what my mother could remember, there was a brother living in Honeoye Falls as an adult.

On her death bed, Alma admitted that she was "full blooded Irish.""

Alma and Edwin were in the 1850 census for Smithfield, Madison Co., NY, living in the household of Thomas F. Petrie, 41, farmer.  They were in the 1860 census for Lenox, Madison Co., NY.  For some reason, Alma was not listed in the 1870 census for Lenox, NY, although Adana Wells (his mother?), 67, was.  Both of them were in the 1880 census for Lenox.  All their children were born in NY.  (R‑2)
