DESCENDANTS OF PHILIP GRAVES AND SUSANNAH HUNSINGER OF MD & KY

GENERATION 1

Philip Graves (1) was born about 1786 in MD. He married Susan Hunsinger, daughter of Mathias Hunsinger and Mary Gears, on 6 April 1812 in Muhlenberg Co., KY. She was born 1792-1793 in Muhlenberg Co., KY, and died 22 March 1871 in Burnt Prairie Twp., White Co., IL.

Philip Graves couldn’t be found in the 1820 census anywhere. He was in the 1830-1850 censuses for Ohio Co., KY.

This family is probably very closely related to that of John Sanders Graves and Mary Susannah Wooton of MD & KY (gen. 115). Philip may be a nephew of John. (R‑3)

GENERATION 2

CHILDREN OF PHILIP GRAVES (1) AND SUSAN HUNSINGER

George H. Graves (3) was born 9 Jan. 1813 in Kentucky, and died 1863. He married Margaret Fulkerson at 3 p.m., Thursday, 27 Feb. 1834. She was born about 1814 in KY. He was a farmer. All their children were born in KY.

The 1840 census for Ohio Co., KY showed George living close to Philip Graves, his father. The 1850 census for District 2, Ohio Co., KY listed all the children except for Idella, and showed them living next door to George's sister Mary. They were in the 1860 census for Twp. 3S, Range 9E, White Co., IL, with children Sarah, 21, William, 17, Ezekiel, 14, and Eliza, 11, and George’s occupation was doctor.

One source gave an additional child, Idella Graves, b. 11 (or 17) March 1869, but that does not seem possible, since George died in 1863, and Idella can’t be found in census records. It is possible this was the daughter of George’s son, Ezekiel. (R‑1, R‑2)

Mary Graves (4) was born 22 Dec. 1820 in Ohio Co., KY, and died 10 Dec. 1863 in Olney, Richland Co., IL. She married John N. Robinson (spelled Robertson in some records) on 31 July 1836 in Ohio Co., KY. The bond was signed by George Graves. John was born 1 Jan. 1813 in Russell Co., VA, and died 4 Nov. 1875 in White Co., IL. The family was in the 1850 census for District 2, Ohio Co., KY. John was a farmer. All their children were born in KY. In 1850, they were living next door to her brother George. The 1860 census for Ceralvo, Ohio Co., KY, listed John and 7 children, but did not list Mary, and showed their surname as Robertson. All their children were born in KY, probably in Ohio Co., with the possible exception of George, who was given as born in VA in the 1860 census. (R‑3)

Sarah J. Graves (5) was born 16 June 1821 (or about 1825, according to the 1850 census), and died 5 Jan. 1898 in Ohio Co., KY. She married Andrew J. Kimbley on 7 July 1842 in Muhlenberg Co., KY. In the 1850 census, they are living only a few houses away from her brother George and her sister Mary, in District 2, Ohio Co., KY, page 66. They were in the 1860 census for Dexter, Ohio Co., KY, Ceralvo P.O., with Andrew J. Kimley, 31, farmer, Sarah J., 39, Mitton F., 11, Preuden M., 9, Jessie O., 7, William B. Graves, 34, school teacher, and Margarett Fulkerson, 25, boarder, all born in KY.

William Alfred Graves (11) was born 3 June 1843 in KY. He married Elizabeth Shores on 19 Nov. 1865. She was born about 1848 in IL. They were in the 1870 census for Burnt Prairie Twp., White Co., IL, living with his parents. They were in the 1880 census for the village of Liberty, Burnt Prairie Twp., White Co., IL. He was a farmer. All their children were born in IL.

Ezekiel Philip Graves (12) was born 29 Oct. 1845 in Hartford, KY, and died 3 April 1919. He was also referred to as Philip C. Graves. He married Amanda (“Manda”) Funkhouser, daughter of James T. Funkhouser and Mary Hunsinger, on 24 Nov. 1867. She was born 5 Jan. 1851 in Burnt Prairie, IL, and died in 1937. They were in the 1870, 1880 and 1900 censuses for Burnt Prairie Twp., White Co., IL. In 1870, his mother and his brother William’s family was living with them. He was a farmer. All their children were born in IL. (R‑2)

George Henry Graves (31), possibly called Henry, was born 22 Oct. 1880 in Burnt Prairie, White Co., IL, and died 26 July 1953 in TN. He married Rosanna Merritt, daughter of Millard Merritt and Flora Baker, on 29 Nov. 1900 in IL. She was born 30 May 1883 in Mill Shoals, White Co., IL. He was still living at home with his parents in the 1900 census for Burnt Prairie Twp., White Co., IL, and was listed as Henry. (R‑4)
