DESCENDANTS OF ENOS GRAVES OF RANDOLPH CO., NC

GENERATION 1

Enos F. Graves (1) was born 20 June 1850 and died 20 March 1922, both in Coleridge, Randolph Co., NC. He first married Lennie Lucus. He married second Sylvania (“Vinia” or “Vina”) E. Siler, daughter of Elyce Siler, in Coleridge, NC about 1894. She was born 27 March 1858 in Randolph Co., NC, and died 4 May 1946 in Coleridge, Randolph Co., NC. Enos was a farmer and worked for John Caveness who owned a farm in Brush Creek. Enos was the last slave owned by the Caveness family. Both Enos and Sylvania were freed from slavery in 1863. They both worshipped at Lambert Chapel Baptist Church, and were buried in the church cemetery. All his children were born in Randolph Co., NC, probably all in Coleridge.

Enos was recorded on the 1880 census in Gulf, Chatham Co., NC, ED 31, p. 26, with wife Emiline, age 24; she and her parents were born in NC. Perhaps Lennie is a nickname for Emiline.

Enos and his second wife “Vina” were recorded on the 1900 census in Matthews Twp., Chatham Co., NC, ED 11 sheet 20A with the following children: Sally J., born April 1881, Alexander, born Nov. 1885, Alfred, born March 1888, Robert A., born March 1890, John D., born Sept. 1891, Ida E., born Sept. 1893, and Annie H., born July 1896. They had been married 16 years, and Vina had eight children, all living. Also living with them was Vina’s mother, Eliza J. (‑‑‑‑‑‑) Siler, born March 1835 in NC. Eliza had two children, with only one living (Vina).

In 1910 the family was recorded in Coleridge Twp., Randolph Co., NC, ED 80, sheet 4A. They had been married 28 years, and only 9 of Vina’s 11 children were living: The following children were living with them in 1910: Alexander A., age 23, Alfred C., age 22, Emmett, age 20, Ida M., age 15, Annie H., age 11, and Leonia N., age 9. They were in the 1920 census for Coleridge, Randolph Co., NC. Sylvinia was a widow in the 1930 census for Coleridge Twp., Randolph Co., NC, living next to George H. Graves.

It is interesting that the 1920 census lists George H. Graves, 56 (b.c. 1864), living next to Enos Graves. Could they have been brothers? (R‑1)

Joseph (“Joe”) P. Graves (2) was born about 1877 in NC, and died after 1930 in Randolph Co., NC. He married Hattie Brown about 1903. She was born about 1886 in NC. They were in the 1910, 1920 and 1930 censuses for Columbia Twp., Randolph Co., NC. He was a farmer. All their children were born in NC. (R‑1)

George Graves (4) was born about 1880 in NC, and died after 1930 in Coleridge, Randolph Co., NC. He married Augusta Ann Marsh, daughter of John Marsh and Ada Ring, about 1907. She was born 21 March 1896 in Randolph Co., NC, and died in Feb. 1977 in Siler City, NC. They were in the 1920 and 1930 censuses for Columbia Twp., Randolph Co., NC. He was a farm laborer. He married Nettie Cheek, daughter of Pascal Cheek and Nora Hoskin, on 7 Aug. 1910 in Ramsuer, Randolph Co., NC. She was born 24 June 1892 in Ramsuer, Randolph Co., NC, and died 13 Jan. 1971 in Siler City, Chatham Co., NC. The family worshipped at Lambert Chapel Baptist Church, in which they were very active, and Alexander and Nettie were both buried in the church cemetery. They were in the 1920 and 1930 censuses for Coleridge Twp., Randolph Co., NC, living next to his father. All their children were born in Coleridge, Randolph Co., NC. (R‑1)
