Alfred Graves (1) was born about 1799 in NC.  He married Annie Amy Walden Spoon.  She was recorded on the 1880 census in Matthews, Chatham Co., NC with three children and two grandsons, all with the surname Gravis [sic].  She may have married second Joseph Chavis, although the Joseph Chavis and Manerva/Minerva listed on the 1880 census are not the same parents as some family trees on Ancestry.com have indicated.  They are Joseph Chavis and Minerva Powell.  (R‑1)

John S. Graves (2) was born 5 April 1852 in NC, and died 15 Feb. 1924 in Back Creek, Randolph Co., NC[1].  He first married Mary E. Bray on 22 Feb. 1877 in Randolph Co., NC[2].  She was born about 1858 in Franklinville, Randolph Co., NC, and died between 1880 and 1885.  This family was recorded on the 1880 census in Franklinsville, NC.  He married second Abigail Bell, daughter of Calvin Bell and Candace M. Charles, on 5 Feb. 1885 in Randolph Co., NC[3].  She was born in Oct. 1855 in NC, and died 5 July 1932 in Asheboro, Randolph Co., NC.  They were buried in Ferree’s Chapel Cem., Randleman, Randolph Co., NC.  This family was recorded on the 1900 and 1910 censuses in Back Creek, NC; their children were born in NC.  (R‑1)

Alfred Enos Graves (3), also called Enoch[4], was born 20 June 1850 (or 16 Feb. 1853) and died 20 (or 21) March 1921, both in Coleridge, Randolph Co., NC[5].  He first married Emeline (“Lennie”) Lucas, daughter of Benjamin Lucas and Caroline Foushee, on 26 March 1876 in Chatham Co., NC[6].  She was born about 1856 in NC, and died after 18 June 1880.  This family was recorded on the 1880 census in Gulf, Chatham Co., NC; their children were born in NC.  He married second Sylvinia (“Vinia” or “Vina”) E. Siler, daughter of Elyce Siler, in Coleridge, NC, on 13 Sept. 1883 in Chatham Co., NC[7].  She was born 27 March 1858 in Randolph Co., NC, and died 4 May 1946 in Coleridge, Randolph Co., NC.  Enos was a farmer and worked for John Caveness who owned a farm in Brush Creek.  Enos was the last slave owned by the Caveness family.  Both Enos and Sylvania were freed from slavery in 1863.  They both worshipped at Lambert Chapel Baptist Church, and were buried in the church cemetery.  All his children were born in Randolph Co., NC, probably all in Coleridge.

Recorded as Enos F., he and his second wife “Vina” were recorded on the 1900 census in Matthews Twp., Chatham Co., NC, ED 11 sheet 20A with the following children:  Sally J., born April 1881, Alexander, born Nov. 1885, Alfred, born March 1888, Robert A., born March 1890, John D., born Sept. 1891, Ida E., born Sept. 1893, and Annie H., born July 1896.   They had been married 16 years, and Vina had eight children, all living.  Also living with them was Vina’s mother, Eliza J. (‑‑‑‑‑‑) Siler, born March 1835 in NC.  Eliza had two children, with only one living (Vina).

In 1910 the family was recorded in Coleridge Twp., Randolph Co., NC, ED 80, sheet 4A.  They had been married 28 years, and only 9 of Vina’s 11 children were living:  The following children were living with them in 1910:  Alexander A., age 23, Alfred C., age 22, Emmett, age 20, Ida M., age 15, Annie H., age 11, and Leonia N., age 9.  They were in the 1920 census for Coleridge, Randolph Co., NC.  Sylvinia was a widow in the 1930 census for Coleridge Twp., Randolph Co., NC, living next to George H. Graves (5) was born 27 Nov. 1863 in Randolph Co., NC, and died 6 Dec. 1943 in Coleridge, Randolph Co., NC[8].  His parents’ names were recorded as Joseph Charis and Amy Graves on his death certificate.  He first married Sylvia Jordan on 23 Dec. 1886 in Matthews, Chatham Co., NC.  She was born 13 Feb. 1870 in NC, and died 18 Oct. 1909.  This family was recorded on the 1900 census in Pleasant Grove, Randolph Co., NC and the 1910 census in Coleridge, NC; their children were born in NC.  He married second Ada A. McDaniel (or Craven), daughter of Harry Craven and Lethia Caviness, on 17 Oct. 1913 in Randolph Co., NC.  She was born 23 March 1881 in Randolph Co., NC, and died 17 Sept. 1942 in Coleridge, Siler City, Randolph Co., NC.  This family was recorded on the 1920-1940 censuses in Coleridge, NC.  George, Sylvia, and Ada were buried in Lambert Chapel Missionary Baptist Church Cem., Siler City, NC.  (R‑1)

Alexander Graves (19) was born 22 Nov. 1886 in Coleridge, Randolph Co., NC, and died 2 June 1990 in Siler City, Chatham Co., NC.  He married Nettie Cheek, daughter of Pascal Cheek and Nora Hoskin, on 7 Aug. 1910 in Ramseur, Randolph Co., NC.  She was born 24 June 1892 in Ramseur, Randolph Co., NC, and died 13 Jan. 1971 in Siler City, Chatham Co., NC.  The family worshipped at Lambert Chapel Baptist Church, in which they were very active, and Alexander and Nettie were both buried in the church cemetery.  They were in the 1920 and 1930 censuses for Coleridge Twp., Randolph Co., NC, living next to his father.  All their children were born in Coleridge, Randolph Co., NC.  (R‑1)

Graves (23) was born 27 Sept. 1893 in Coleridge, Randolph Co., NC, and died 12 Jan. 1970 in Chatham Co., NC.  She married William Squire Spinks on 30 June 1925.  He was born 29 July 1896 in Randolph Co., NC, and died 21 Jan. 1988 in Siler City, Chatham Co., NC.  He was a World War I veteran.  They were in the 1930 census for Matthews, Chatham Co., NC, when he was a mill laborer.  (R‑1)

Nancy Leonia Graves (25) was born 13 Feb. 1901 and died 21 Nov. 1976, both in Randolph Co., NC, and was buried in Lambert Chapel Missionary Baptist Church Cem., Siler City, NC.  She first married Henry Thomas Walden, son of Haywood Walden and Eliza Walden, on 24 Feb. 1927 in Greensboro, Gilmer Township, Guilford, NC[15].  He was born 15 Nov. 1879 in Randolph Co., NC, died 27 Aug. 1928 in Coleridge, Randolph Co., NC[16], and was buried in Brush Creek Cem.  She married second General Robert Walden on 23 May 1931 in Bear Creek, Chatham Co., NC[17].  He was born 12 June 1885 in Chatham Co., NC, died 23 Feb. 1946 Randolph Co., NC, and was buried in Glovers Grove Cem., Siler City, Chatham Co., NC.  This family was recorded on the 1940 census in Coleridge, NC; all Nancy's children were born in Randolph Co., NC.  (R‑1)
