DESCENDANTS OF ROBERT GRAVE, ISABELLA ------ AND MARGARET ‑‑‑‑‑‑ OF KESWICK, CUMBERLAND

GENERATION 1

Robert Grave (1) was born about 1820 in Keswick, Cumberland.  He apparently first married Isabella ‑‑‑‑‑‑.  She was born about 1821 in Keswick.  He seems to have married second Margaret ‑‑‑‑‑‑.  She was born about 1831 in Keswick.  Robert was in the 1841 census for Keswick, Cumberland, age 20, woollen weaver.  Robert and Isabella were in the 1851 and 1861 censuses for Keswick.  In 1851 he was a handloom woollen weaver, and in 1861 he was a lead miner (probably actually graphite/pencil lead).  In the 1871 census for Keswick, Isabella could not be found, but Robert, 51, woollen weaver, was listed with wife Margaret, 40, and an additional daughter, Mary E. Grisdale, 7 (probably Margaret’s by a previous marriage).  They could not be found in the 1881 census.  (R‑1)

GENERATION 2

CHILDREN OF ROBERT GRAVE (1) AND ISABELLA ------

John Grave (9) was born about 1862 or 1864 in Keswick, Cumberland, and died in 1908.  He was one of the first patients at Blencathra Sanatorium, Threlkeld, in 1904, where he was treated for tuberculosis from which he probably died, probably due to his occupation of sawyer in the pencil mills.  His treatment in the sanatorium was paid for by “T. S. Highton Esq., Brigham School, Keswick (Hon. Sec. John Grave Fund)” where his son Leslie (and probably his siblings) was a pupil.  He married Mary Jane Graham on 1 June 1885.  She was born about 1863 in Bassenthwaite, Cumberland, died 20 Oct. 1931, and was buried in St. John’s churchyard.  They were in the 1891 census for Keswick, Cumberland, when he was a pencil maker.  They were in the 1901 census for West Derby, Liverpool, Lancashire, when he was a sawyer.  All their children were born in Keswick.  (R‑1)
