Rev. 25 July 1993, Gen. 76

George W. Graves (1) lived in Seneca Falls, Seneca Co., NY, perhaps for the first 50 years of his life. He married Sarah ------. He died 11 Dec. ---- in Brewster, Putnam Co., NY, at 80 years of age. (Putnam Co. is a small county just north of Westchester Co., NY, and very close to Waterbury and Bridgeport, CT.)

The following obituary is from the Brewster, NY newspaper.

"Deacon George W. Graves died in this village on Wednesday, Dec. 11th, at the residence of his son-in-law, Theodore B. Phelps. He was in the 81st year of his age. The cause of death was cerebral softening.

During a residence of more than thirty years in Brewster few men were more alive than Deacon Graves. He was employed by Borden's Condensed Milk Company as a milk inspector and no one can remember a single day that he was absent from his post. His day began about four in the morning at the factory and ended upon his return from dairy inspection soon after candle light. He did not please all the dairymen all of the time, but no one ever doubted conscientious discharge of the duties of his position.

He was a member and senior deacon of the Baptist Church and as long as health permitted probably missed fewer services than any other church member in the township. Outside his church and his occupation he had no special interest and moved to and fro between home and factory and farm very quietly. Infirmities finally compelled him to retire. He visited his son Charles in Bridgeport for a time and returned here about a month ago for a visit at the home where he died.

The funeral was held at Mr. Phelp's residence at 1:30 this afternoon, Rev. H. R. Westcott officiating. Interment at the Milltown Rural Cemetery." (R-1)
