Revised 30 Dec. 2005, Gen. 231

Robert Graves (1) was born about 1765 (between 1760 and 1770), and died after 1830.  He married Edy ‑‑‑‑‑‑.  She was born 20 Feb. 1779.  Her birth date and the names and dates of birth of their children is in “Father Nash’s Record of Baptisms, 1816” from a church in Cooperstown, Otsego Co., NY (microfilmed by the LDS Church, where the surname was incorrectly indexed as Grace).

Robert Graves could not be unambiguously identified in the 1810 census, but he was in the 1820 census for Potsdam, St. Lawrence Co., NY, page 68, with 1 male 45+ (Robert), 1 male 16-26 (John), 1 female under 10, and the rest of the page missing.  He was in the 1830 census for Potsdam, St. Lawrence Co., NY, page 148, incorrectly indexed as Grous, with 1 male 60-69, and 1 female 50-59.  Immediately after him in the listing was John Graves, with 1 male under 5, 1 male 20-29, 1 female under 5, 1 female 5-9, and 1 female 20-29.  (R‑1)

Children - Graves

John Graves (2) was born 9 June 1802 in Cooperstown, Otsego Co., NY, died 14 July 1874, and was buried at Little Eagle Creek Cem., IN.  He first married Mary F. Donlan (or Donlon).  She was born 2 June 1791 in Enise, Ireland, and died 30 Jan. 1852.  All their children were born in Potsdam, St. Lawrence Co., NY.  The family moved to Abington, Wayne Co., IN (on the Ohio line, east of Indianapolis) in 1839.

He secondly married Susan ‑‑‑‑‑‑. She was born 27 Dec. 1822, died 19 Dec. 1892, and was also buried at Little Eagle Creek.  It is not known whether there were any children by this second marriage.

Most of the information for the first two generations was taken from a Bible given by Pleasant Nantz to Margaret Graves on 2 June 1884.  The Bible was subsequently destroyed.

It was previously believed that this Graves family might be of German or Dutch origin.  Some of the names in the early family appear to be German.  Also, there was a Thomas Graves of NY state who had a son, William Tubbs Graves, b. 1782, d. 1838 in Allen Co., IN, who married Maria Harder.  They may have belonged to the Reformed Dutch Protestant Church.  William and Maria lived in Herkimer Co., NY and possibly Jefferson Co., NY.  Both these counties are very close to St. Lawrence and Oswego counties where John and Mary Graves lived.  However, DNA testing results have shown that this Graves family shares common ancestry with John Graves of Frederick Co., VA (genealogy 116) and Thomas Graves and Ann ‑‑‑‑‑‑ of Cambridgeshire, England and Australia (genealogy 683), which indicates the family is of English ancestry.  There are also some name similarities between this family and genealogy 116, and many descendants of both moved to Indiana.  (R‑1)
