Rev. 31 Dec. 2008, Gen. 280
DESCENDANTS OF THOMAS
GRAVES AND MARGARET ------ OF VA, TN & AR
GENERATION 1
Thomas Graves (1) was born about
1784 in VA, according to the 1860 census of Saline Co., AR, and died
1860-1870. He married Margaret ‑‑‑‑‑‑
in 1808 in VA[1]. She was born about 1788 in VA. The 1830 census for Dickson Co., TN shows a
Thomas Graves, age 40-50, with 4 boys, 3 girls, and a female 40-50, presumably
his wife.
The first documentation of Thomas
Graves in Arkansas was in the Saline Co., AR Common Law Book A, Feb. Term,
1840. The last documentation is on the
1860 Saline Co., AR census, where he was listed as 76, superannuated (too old
to work), and living in the household of John B. Wilson, his son-in-law.
It was previously suspected that
this Thomas Graves might be a son of William Graves of SC and Franklin Co., TN
(genealogy 37), who was born about 1750, and had sons Jacob, John R., etc. However, DNA testing has shown that is not
possible, since the two families are of different haplogroups.
They were in the 1850 census for
Saline Co., AR, with grandchildren Gentha, 16, Giles, 12, and Mary J., 11,
living with them. (R‑1, R‑2)

GENERATION 2
CHILDREN OF THOMAS GRAVES (1)
AND MARGARET ------
James C. Graves (2) is probably the
son shown in the 1830 census for Dickson Co., TN, born 1810-1815 in TN, and
died 1841 in Saline Co., AR. He married
Eliza Wilson on 16 Aug. 1832 in Dickson Co., TN. She was born in TN, and died about 1848 in Saline Co., AR. Their first 2 children were born in TN and the
third in AR[2].
It is strongly suspected that Eliza
Wilson was a sister of John B. Wilson who married Salina Graves. Not only were both these couples married
about the same time around the same place (Dickson Co., TN), but on the 1860
census for Saline Co., AR, Thomas Graves, the father of James and Salina
Graves, was listed as living in the John B. Wilson household.
In addition, after James Graves
died in 1841 in Saline Co., his widow Eliza remarried a man named Stephen
Porter who in 1848 gained guardianship over James and Eliza Graves’
children. By early in the 1850’s, both
Eliza and Stephen had died.
The 1850 Saline Co. census shows
Stephen Porter as a widower with three young children. He died in the early 1850’s. The young children listed on the 1850 census
are listed on the 1880 Saline Co. census as older adults living with John B.
Wilson and listed as his nephew and niece.

+9. Genetha Josephine Graves, b.c. 1834, m.
Leonard Vandergrift, 9 April 1854.
+10. Giles Richardson Graves, b. 23 April 1837, m. Martha H. Vandegrift,
16 Aug. 1859, d. 12 March 1908.
+11. Mary Jane Graves, b.c. 1839, m. William T. Brown, 8 Feb. 1856.
Salina Graves (3) was born in 1814
in TN, and died in 1851 in Saline Co., AR.
She married John B. Wilson, son of Joel Wilson and Christinia Buckley,
on 6 Dec. 1832 in Dickson Co., TN. He
was born in 1813 in TN.
It is believed likely that John B.
Wilson, the husband of Alina Graves, was a brother of Eliza Wilson who was the
wife of James C. Graves. Not only were
both of these couples married about the same time around the same place
(Dickson Co., TN), but on the 1860 Saline Co., AR census, Thomas Graves, the
father of James and Salina Graves, was living in the John B. Wilson household. Moreover, after James Graves died in 1841,
his widow remarried a man named Stephen Porter who in 1848 gained guardianship
over James and Eliza’s children (Josephine, Giles, and Mary Graves). Sadly, by early in the 1850’s, both Eliza and
Stephen died.
The 1850 census for Saline Co., AR
shows Stephen Porter as a widower with three young children. On the 1880 census for Saline Co., AR, the 3
children were living with John B. Wilson and listed as his nephew and niece. (R‑2)

John R. Graves (4) was born about
1820 in TN, and died 5 June 1864 in Little Rock, Pulaski Co., AR. He married Sophronia (also given as Sophia
or Sophira) Baggett on 24 June 1850 in Bradley Co., AR. She was born about 1834 in AL, and died
after 1880. He may have had a previous
marriage about 1846, since there were two children born before his marriage to
Sophronia.
Listed in the 1860 census for
Saline Co., AR, with Sophia, b.c. 1837, AL, Benjamin F., b.c. 1848, Sarah E.,

25 when he married in 1845. He served
in the Civil War for the Confederacy from Arkansas. He enlisted as a private in Company I, 2nd Mounted
Rifles Cavalry Regt. The family has not
been found in the 1850 census. They
were in the 1870 census for Franklin Twp., Grant Co., AR. They were in the 1880 census for Simpson
Twp., Grant Co., AR.
All their children were born in

Thomas William Graves (6) was born
about 1822-23 in Dickson Co., TN, and died in 1864 in St. Louis, MO. He married Margaret Jane Brown, daughter of
Halbert Brown, on 22 Nov. 1849 at the home of Halbert Brown, Saline Co., AR. She was born about 1834 in Alma, AR, and
died in 1864 in St. Louis, MO.
Thomas migrated westward to AR in
early life. He enlisted in the
Washington, AR, Volunteer Cavalry (I Co.) on 15 June 1846. He fought with Gen. Winfield Scott at Vera
Cruz, Mexico. He was honorably
discharged on 20 June 1847 at Camaro, Mexico.
In Arkansas he met and married his
wife. Little is known of her family
except that she had a brother, Will Brown, who lived at Alma, AR. When the Civil War started, Thomas was
forced to enter the Southern Army, even though he was a Northern
sympathizer. He left his little family
living on a farm near what is now Bryant, Benton Co., AR, and how they lived
one can only wonder.
He did get home occasionally, but,
at the first opportunity, he crossed over to the Union lines and became a
Northern soldier. In 1864 his regiment
was ordered to St. Louis and he was allowed to take his family with him. They went by steamboat down the Arkansas
River, and then up the Mississippi to St. Louis. Smallpox was raging in St. Louis, and soon both he and his wife
caught it, and they both died, just two days apart. (They are also said to have died in a cholera epidemic.) Neither a place of burial nor any burial
record has been located for either of them.
Soon little Chester passed away
too, and the remaining three children were placed in an orphan asylum from
where they were adopted by families who wanted children.
All their children were born in
Saline Co., AR. (R‑1, R‑2)

about 1825 in TN, and probably died before 1860, since he was not listed with
his family in 1860. He married Cordelia
A. Light on 6 Feb. 1849. She was born
about 1825 in TN. They were in the 1850
census for Saline Dist., Saline Co., AR, when he was listed as a laborer. Cordelia was in the 1860 census for Little

CHILDREN OF THOMAS W. GRAVES (6)
AND MARGARET J. BROWN
Alfred Rice Graves (27) was born 15
March 1854 (or 1851) on a farm in Bryant (near Benton), Saline Co., AR, died 7
Aug. 1914 in Melvern, Osage Co., KS, and was buried 9 Aug. 1914 in Oak Hills
Cem., Quenemo, KS. When his father's
regiment was sent to St. Louis, the whole family went there by boat, and soon
after they arrived both parents died of smallpox and the children were all
placed in an orphan asylum.
Alfred was soon adopted by a German
family who took him to their farm near Edwardsville, IL. He was about 10 years of age, and helped the
women around the house until he was old enough to work in the fields. This family was named Doubt. They had three grown sons and one daughter
-- David, Mike, John, and Margaret.
The winter Alfred was 19 he went to
visit his uncle Will Brown (his mother's brother) who lived at Alma, AR. Here he worked all winter in the woods with
his uncle's sons getting out logs. In
the spring, they made a huge raft of these logs and floated them down the
Arkansas River to Little Rock and sold the raft to a lumber mill. They then
walked all the way back to Alma. Alfred
had by this time tired of AR and decided to go back to St. Louis where his sister
Susan had married Albert Norton. He got
a job with the O.L. Chase bag-making firm and worked for them about two
years. He then went to work for his
brother-in-law Albert Norton in the whitening and kalsomining (calcimining)
business.
He had gone to school for about
four winters at Elm Grove school near Edwardsville while with the Doubt
family. Here he met Sarah Bliss Morris,
daughter of James Morris and Ursula Bliss, and married her on 6 April 1876 at
her father's farm home, known as Elm Grove, near Edwardsville, Madison Co., IL,
near St. Louis, MO. She was born 13
March 1856 in Liberty Prairie, IL, died 16 Dec. 1935 in Melvern, KS, and was
buried 18 Dec. 1935 in Oak Hills Cem., Quenemo, KS.
After marriage, the young couple
went to St. Louis and Alfred continued to work for Albert Norton. About the time their first child (Alfred) was
born in late 1876, the Doubt family sold out in IL and moved to Lincoln,
NE. Their glowing accounts of the
country induced Albert Norton to sell out and go to Lincoln, where he started a
grocery. Alfred R. Graves went too and lived in Lincoln, working at the
whitening business, and later he moved to a farm owned by John Doubt.
In a couple of years Albert Norton
tired of Nebraska and went back to St. Louis.
Alfred and Sarah went too. While in Lincoln, Sarah gave birth to a
little boy named Chester who died when less than a year old. Before leaving Nebraska, a girl, Grace May,
was born. In St. Louis, Albert Norton
returned to the whitening business and Alfred worked for him.
In 1884, Sarah's uncle Willard Bliss
induced Alfred and his wife to move to his farm near Nokomis, IL, where their
son Frank was born. The uncle got into
financial trouble and sold the farm, and Alfred and family moved back to St.
Louis, and again worked for Albert Norton. In the fall of 1885, Sarah's sister
Lidia and husband Lue Graden moved to Osborne Co., KS. Alfred lived there one winter and in the
spring of 1886 moved to a government homestead claim in Sheridan Co., KS. Here Sarah gave birth to a baby girl,
Margaret. The family lived there 5
years, proved up on the claim, and then moved to Lucas in Russell Co., KS. Charles Thomas Graves was born there on the
Crandall farm. The family lived there 3
years, and Alfred bought a farm and taught school. He sold the farm in 1894 and moved in Aug. 1894 to Quenemo, Osage
Co., KS. All Kansas moves were by covered wagon. They bought an 80 acre farm, and here John Albert was born in
1899. While living in this house, their
oldest son and daughter were married.
In 1903 the family sold this farm and bought another near Melvern, KS,
where Alfred was living at the time of his death. Sarah, his wife, sold the farm and moved to Melvern in 1920, and
there she lived until her death. (R‑1)
