DESCENDANTS OF DANIEL GRAVES AND ELEANOR GRADY

OF CULPEPER, AUGUSTA & ROCKINGHAM COUNTIES, VA

GENERATION 1

Daniel (1) Graves was born about 1765 in Virginia.  He married Eleanor Grady, daughter of John Grady and Lucy ‑‑‑‑‑‑, on 22 May 1792 in Culpeper Co., VA.  She was born about 1770 in VA.

The 1810 census of Rockingham Co., VA lists a Daniel Graves with 3 males and 1 female under 10, 1 male and 2 females 10-16, 1 male 45 and up (probably Daniel), and 1 female 26-45.  This would have been Daniel’s parents if it is his family.  The list of children below is an attempt to place them in the most likely relationship, assuming there were 7 children in 1810.  (R‑10)

GENERATION 2

CHILDREN OF DANIEL GRAVES (1) AND ELEANOR GRADY

Daniel Graves (6) was born about 1802-1804[1] in VA.  He married Patsey (or Patsy) Howell 1 June 1828 (according to entry by Benjamin Denton, recorded Dec. 1828).  Patsy’s given name may have been Martha.  (It has been said by R‑1 and R‑2 that he married Elizabeth Sheets, and that she was born about 1830 (not possible if she was mother of the children listed below), possibly in Rockingham Co., VA.  However, the marriage certificate of George W. Graves says his parents were Daniel and Patsey Graves, and the records in the courthouse in Harrisonburg, VA give his wife's name as Patsy Howell.  Daniel's name was previously given as David, but that was probably just a misreading of the marriage certificate, since the abbreviation of Daniel as Danl could easily be interpreted as David.)

Daniel has been thought by some to be from Graves Mill, Madison Co., VA.  However, no record has been found in Madison Co. for a Daniel Graves, and, more importantly, the Graves families in Graves Mill were part of genealogy 169; Y-DNA testing has shown genealogy 511 descends from an entirely different ancestor than that of gen. 169.  This genealogy is probably most closely related to genealogies 56, 94, 152, and 215, based on DNA testing.

Daniel was in the 1850 census for Montgomery Co., VA.  No wife was listed in that census, so she had probably died by then.  Roanoke Co., where the family lived in later years is next to Montgomery Co., and is on the main migration route from Madison and Rockingham counties, VA.  Roanoke Co. was formed in 1882 from Botecourt and Montgomery counties.  Mrs. Ruth Lemon (R‑2) has heard that Daniel Graves was from Augusta Co., VA.  (R‑1, R‑2, R‑7)
