Richard Graves (5) was born about 1802 in Ashdon, Essex, and died in Sept. 1880 at age 78 in Ashdon or Saffron Walden, Essex.  He married Susan Cowling, daughter of William Cowling and Mary Reader, on 1 June 1843 in All Saints, Castle Camps, Cambridgeshire[1].  She was born 28 Dec. 1821 in Castle Camps, Cambridgeshire, and died in 1870.  Their first child was born in Castle Camps, and all the others in Ashdon, Essex.  They were in the 1851 and 1861 censuses for Ashdon, Essex, with her widowed mother living with them in 1851.  He was in the 1871 census for Ashdon, without Susan.  He was an agricultural labourer.  Susan was in the 1841 census for Castle Camps, living with her mother Mary cowling, 50, presumably widowed, and her brothers and sisters.  Richard could not be found in the 1841 census.  Their first child, Ann, was born in Castle Camps, Cambridgeshire or in Ashdon, Essex, and all the others were born in Ashdon, Essex.  There is a possibility that Ann was not a daughter of Richard.

It is sometimes difficult to explain and even to understand juristrictions in England.  For instance, a map of Essex shows Stratord and West Ham next to each other, but Stratford is also part of West Ham parish in Essex.  Stratford is a town in east London, within the ceremonial county of Greater London, but in the historic county of Essex.  (R‑1, R‑2)

William Graves (34) was born 30 Jan. 1858 in Ashdon, Essex, and died 19 May 1921 in Essex (or in London).  He first married Eliza Winchester, daughter of George Winchester and Eliza Saunders, on 3 Sept. 1877 in Bethnal Green, London.  (Source R‑1 said he married Eliza Wilson in the first quarter of 1874 in West Ham, Essex.)  She was born about 1856 in Brighton, Sussex, and died about 1893 in West Ham, London.  They were in the 1881 census for West Ham, Essex, when he was a labourer and she was a charwoman.  The place of birth of some of the children is given as either West Ham or Stratford, but they are next to each other.

After Eliza died, William apparently married one of her sisters, Elizabeth, in 1894 in Croydon, Surrey.  She was born about 1866 in Brighton, Sussex, and died about 1912 in West Ham, London.  They were in the 1911 census at 41 Cruikshank Rd., Stratford East, Essex, with his occupation as wood sawyer at a carriage works, 6 of her 7 children living, and all 6 of her living children at home.  (R‑1, R‑2)
