DESCENDANTS OF THOMAS WHITFOOT GREAVES OF ENGLAND & BARBADOS, BRITISH WEST INDIES

 

The following genealogy has been compiled by: Kenneth V. Graves, 20 Binney Circle, Wrentham, MA 02093.  Additions and corrections are requested.  It is desired to have this genealogy as complete as possible, and contain all descendants of this family.  Information needed includes birth, marriage, and death dates and places of both descendants and spouses, full names of descendants and spouses, names of parents of spouses, occupations, church memberships, interesting stories, addresses of descendants, and sources of information (for example, family Bible, cemetery records, etc.).  It is the intention of the compiler to publish the corrected and expanded version of this as part of a book.  It is also hoped that compiling and publishing this genealogy will help determine the ancestry of this part of the family.

GENERATION 1

 

Thomas Whitfoot Greaves (1) was born in 1793, and was baptized 10 Feb. 1793 in Barbados, British West Indies.  His parents may have been Edward Duke Greaves and Anne Stevenson.  He married Elizabeth Alice Austin, daughter of Thomas Austin and Alice Henry, on 5 Nov. 1817 in St. Michael, Barbados..  She was born in 1792 in St. Michael, Barbados.  He may have had other marriages.  One source shows him marrying Frances Ann Lawrence on 1 Dec. 1812 and marrying Elizabeth Jane Butcher on 5 Nov. 1817, both in St. Michael, Barbados.

Because of lack of reliable information and necessary research, this genealogy doesnŐt include earlier generations that some people are claiming.  Even some of the information included in this genealogy may have errors that need to be corrected.

CHILDREN OF THOMAS W. GREAVES (1) AND ELIZABETH MAXWELL

Edward Austin Greaves (2) was born in 1813, and died 16 July 1867 in St. Lucy, Barbados.  He first married Dorothy Ann Walter on 12 July 1836 in St. Peter, Barbados.  She probably died early, perhaps in childbirth.  He married second Mary Maxwell.  (R‑3)

Edward Austin Greaves (6) was born in 1853 and died in 1921.  He married Mary Magdalene Perryman on 2 Aug. 1879 in the Anglican parish church of St. Philip, Barbados.  She was born in 1854, and died 7 Sept. 1911 in St. MartinŐs Church, Barbados.  He may have had other marriages also.  (R‑3)

Earl Godwin Graves (17) was born 4 April 1907 in Atlantic City, Atlantic Co., NJ, and died 5 March 1956.  He married Winifred Colette Sealy, daughter of George Sealy and Clarice ‑‑‑‑‑‑, on 4 April 1932 in New York City, NY.  She was born 24 Oct. 1912 in New York City, NY, and died 8 Feb. 1998.

GENERATION 6

 

CHILDREN OF EARL G. GRAVES (17) AND WINIFRED C. SEALY

Earl Gilbert Graves (21) was born 9 Jan. 1935 in Manhattan, New York City, NY (birth index, New York, NY), and died 6 April 2020.  He married Barbara Eliza Kydd, daughter of James Christopher Campbell Kydd and Doris ‑‑‑‑‑‑, in 1960.

He was a very successful publisher and entrepreneur.  According to an obituary in the Wall Street Journal, April 18, 2020, Earl Graves founded Black Enterprise magazine in 1970 and ran a PepsiCola bottling business in Washington, DC, in the 1990s. He also wrote a popular 1997 book, "How to Succeed in Business Without Being White." He served as a director of major companies including Chrysler Corp., Federated Department Stores Inc., and Aetna Inc.

He credited his wife with helping him launch Black Enterprise. Aside from writing, editing and serving as a sales director and office manager, she was "vice president in charge of shutting down the publisher's bad ideas," he wrote. With help from his sons, he diversified his publishing company into broadcasting, websites, conferences, and golf and tennis tournaments.  (R‑1, R‑6)
